The only free sound editing program I know of is Audacity. Audacity (R) | Free, open source, cross-platform audio software for multi-track recording and editing.


I use Wavepad myself, but it's not free, but offers a wealth of features.

FFmpeg integration - Audacity Wiki

There may be some difficulties occasionally as some content authors wil "mix and Match" the formats and the "container" used. The audacity forum will normally be a good place to start if you have any issues.

As audacity is fully open source it may be possible for one on the Experts on the site to design a filter to work with excotic formats

If you Google "aac to wav" you'll find several online convertors as well.
