    Video Converter free

Does anyone know of a good free video converter (mkv to either avi or mp4). I have been using the free Prism Video converter and is fairly good.

At times it does NOT work as well I think it should and would at least have good backup for Prism.

    Thanks

Check out an old version of Freemake. The new version will add a watermark.

Thanks Paul Black that old version of Freemake seems to work so far. I was nervous at first when after installing it, it said was out of date. I convert a couple videos and was slow but got the job done.

Banyarola I was going try Format Factory, but I could NOT get that version to download.

    Thanks again guys

Banyarola I went to that site but I saw no place to actually download the Version 3.7.0.0.

I could use a bit of help.
    Thanks

I don't think that site is kosher. This is :

Format Factory - Free media file format converter

(p.s. if your goal is speed, forget it. all converters take forever. also, mkv to avi/mp4? that, to me, is like, going backwards ...)

I second MourningStar's suggestion of using: Handbrake!
It's been around since the dawn of Windows XP. It's free. It's heavily tested and trusted and used.

Conversion of containers or codecs will only take an incredibly long time on a machine that's incredibly slow.
The biggest factors are: RAM and CPU power. If you have a CUDA-enabled GPU: The conversion time is multitudes faster (reduced time to convert).
