IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SANDBOXIE VERSIONS

Sophos is excited to announce that we are making Sandboxie a free tool, with plans to transition it to an open source tool.
This new evolution of Sandboxie is one we are enthusiastic about, but that does not mean this was an easy decision to make. Sandboxie has never been a significant component of Sophos’ business, and we have been exploring options for its future for a while.
Frankly, the easiest and least costly decision for Sophos would have been to simply end of life Sandboxie. However, we love the technology too much to see it fade away. More importantly, we love the Sandboxie community too much to do that. The Sandboxie user base represents some of the most passionate, forward thinking, and knowledgeable members of the security community and we didn’t want to let you down.
After thoughtful consideration we decided that the best way to keep Sandboxie going was to give it back to its users – transitioning it to an open source tool. We will release more information about the open source project as we continue to work on the details.
Until the open source transition is completed we have decided to make all restricted features of Sandboxie completely free.

Wow! That's terrific news!

I use Sandboxie EXCLUSIVELY with my browser as my first layer of virus protection on all of my computers and I have my parents use Sandboxie on their computer. It's been a great product, but I could only use its free ability with the browser only because I didn't want to commit myself to a some $20/month bill for the full fledged product seen as how I have other bills. If I wanted to "sandbox" something I'd just fire up VMware Workstation Player and run what ever in there. I even had a VMware image OS that had Shadow Defender installed so that I could test things in there and on OS reboot all would be wiped out. It was nice because using Shadow Defender on my host was waaaay to restrictive without having to add lots and lots and lots of whitelisted paths and registry entries.

I'm really happy they saw the good in what Sandboxie does and how prudent users do in fact use it as an extra layer of security. But I have this sneaky suspicion perhaps something was going on more behind the scenes. First, the main forum website went dark with server errors and other crap. Then the update mechanism was all messed up. Then they moved to a new web address for forum support at Sophos' website. Now it's free and will become open source. Perhaps they couldn't or didn't want to invest any more capital in a monster or something. At any rate, I'm really glad they just didn't pull the plug which would have really sucked since Sandboxie is my primarily means of anti-virus protection and privacy. The other being where I scan ALL downloads at Virus Total and make periodic disk clones. Once upon a time I ran definition-based anti-virus. Not so anymore as I find them to not be a full proof way of virus protection, consume resources, slow down boot up or computer use and your Internet speed, and have the uncanny ability to mess around with things you're trying to do. Especially if you like using an injector to inject a DLL into a game process to cheat and any other nerdy thing I like to do. So an anti-virus software is not something I use anymore except to scan all of my computers with a wide range of tools every once in a while with some tools most people never even heard of before. Like Sanity Check or Ring3 Hook Scanner, Steam Armor or Herdprotect portable.

Thanks for the article. I'm definitely going to download the new version, and of course scan it a Virus Total. LOL

Unreal. Just downloaded now and had to fill out all kinds of crap for government compliance due to export or some utter stupid massive crap. I have NEVER seen anything like that before in all the years I'v used and download files from the Internet.

Think they'll figure out I used a fake name with my none-five eyes jurisdiction VPN and protonmail email? LMAO! Hell if I freely just dish out my name on the Internet. Not even on social media and I gave up FaceMoron years ago and just use Twitter with a fake name. Not even YouTube has my real name. Thank God G+ is gone. I lost a really great user name when YouTube first started out due to that crap. So wish the original creators didn't sell out to Google.
