Windows 7: Shift+Ctrl+Home/End" doesn't select to beginning/end of document

Shift+Ctrl+Home/End" doesn't select to beginning/end of document

This is happening on two different Windows 7 computers (desktop and laptop, both Dells), and in multiple programs on both machines. I am positive that the combination Shift+Ctrl+End ought to select/highlight text to the end of the current document. Likewise the same combo with Home should select to the beginning. I've used this so many times in word processors, email programs, forum posts like this, etc. that it has become reflex. But for the last couple of weeks it has done nothing at all. Could there have been some system update that killed this useful function? Am I the only one?

[1] The combination Shift+Ctrl+End does select/highlight the text to the end of the current document but ONLY from the point that the cursor is in down to the end.

[2] The combination Shift+Ctrl+Home does select/highlight the text to the beginning of the current document but ONLY from the point that the cursor is in up to the beginning.

[3] To select the whole document [top to bottom] then you need to use CTRL+A.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, Paul, I know that that is what these key combinations are supposed to do. But they don't. They don't actually do anything at all. I take it that you are not experiencing this? If it were just one machine I'd figure it was a physical keyboard or driver issue. But it's on two machines, one a desktop and one a laptop, both having the same problem.

[1] Are the computers networked?
[2] Have the two computers been used by the same user?
[3] If so, has the user changed or adapted any HotKeys [locally] in any way for example?

I hope this helps!

Thanks for responding, Paul. Yes, I have on rare occasions networked the two computers and used both of them myself. (No one else uses these machines.) But I haven't changed any hotkeys, at least not intentionally. I don't even know how to do so. But hey -- it's Windows, it's easy to do stuff by accident! I've been trying to find anything in Windows Help, Control Panel, and online about how hotkeys can be changed, and even there I can't come up with anything. Sorry to sound like such a dope, but can you point me to where I could look to see whether I might have changed something?

FYI: Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End still work fine to go to the top/bottom of a document; it's only the addition of Shift that causes nothing to happen. So weird.

I started having the same issue in one of my Windows 10 computers. Based on the date of your post, I think the timing was about the same for me. I'm obviously searching for a solution.

Exactly the same: ctrl-shift-home and ctrl-shift-end have stopped doing anything, ctrl-home and ctrl-end still jump to start and end of document respectively. Also, shift-home and shift-end still select to beginning of line and end of line respectively. It's only the full combination of ctrl-shift-home and ctrl-shift-end that suddenly stopped working.

This is on a work computer (don't have the same problem on my home computers). I wonder if the company recently rolled out some update that broke this standard key combination as a reserved hot-key combination for some other program...

Wow, that was absolutely it! I never would have guessed that was the problem. However, for me, Shift-PgUp/PgDn still work, and the Home and End versions worked until about a 1-2 months ago. Also, it only affected 1 of my computers (just retested -- closing Opera fixes it on the problem computer, but having Opera running has no ill effect on the others). So this is definitely not a universal problem that if you have Opera browser running, you'll lose Ctrl-Shift-Home/End.

Following a bunch of testing on my part, here's a summary of the solution options from simplest to most complex, but also in order of increasing permanence (#3 is what I ultimately did which seems like a permanent fix):
  1. Close Opera (problem returns when Opera restarts)
  2. Kill the extensions within Opera by pressing Shift-Esc in Opera (you may have to expand the Task column to see them), then select "Extensions: Video handler" and click on End Process. You may have to do this twice, as it seems to bounce back after the first attempt. The problem returns when Opera restarts, but at least this lets you use Opera at the same time as you use Ctrl-Shift-Home/End.
  3. If you are running Opera version 65 or later (maybe even 64 or later, but definitely NOT version 63 or earlier), and if you're willing to reset your Opera settings, you can completely and permanently fix the problem by resetting Opera's settings: Opera menu -> Settings -> Advanced -> Browser -> Reset settings to their original defaults. This works because the Opera team has fixed the problem as of Ver 64 or 65, but depending on your settings, they don't change with the updates unless you manually reset them.

Pressing “Ctrl+A” on the keyboard to “select all” doesn’t work, I’m wondering why the “Ctrl+A” doesn’t work and all the files are not selected. What might be the issue? Which settings should I change to let it work back as regular? Thank you

ctrl + c & right shift + c broken
I have absolutely no idea how I managed to break these two combinations. StickyKeys isn't enabled. Any other key combination works. I accidently hit the sleep mode button (on keyboard) I assume that broke shift + c, but ctrl + c wasn't working before. I'm desperate; searching the web for...

Shift+Del somehow became identical to ctrl+v?
Hi. In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed that using shift+del in text input areas, such as Notepad, OOo Writer, browser text fields, etc - pretty much anywhere I can input text - shift+del is acting identically to ctrl+v. I don't know why this is occurring and I want to make it stop. I have...
