    Problem downloading MSN Messenger.

    Hi,

I am trying to download Windows Live Messenger and get two error messages: aborted:0x80004004 and hr:0x80070643.

This is a brand new Sony Vaio running Windows 7, so far I've only downloaded iTunes, nothing else, and that worked fine.

    Thanks.

Oh, fair enough. Sorry, I don't know anything aside from the basics in terms of computer.

Download manager, is that the little bar at the bottom that says what you're downloading? I'm going straight to the Windows site and clicking download, click run, click yes click no/etc and it launches the installation (which then fails)

I googled them both, found some ways to fix it but how do I know it's a reputable source and it won't screw up my computer?

Still messing with this, I've tried online fixes to no avail, talked to Sony tech support to no avail, emailed Microsoft to no avail.. what's next?

Have you considered downloading the entire suite? (All of Windows Live Essentials)

Download the LIve installer, then choose what you want to install:

Don't go a bunch on any of Windows Live stuff myself.

Messenger is a buggy, unreliable IM client, with laggy bad quality audio and video and frequent appalling file transfer speeds and reliability - not to mention a history of users being forced to regularly update to the latest version of their creation.

Compared to pure video suites like Logitech Vid Messenger scores poorly on quality.

Really? Why bother with video or audio? It works fine as a basic MSN client.

It's supposed to be far more than a basic IM application though, and bloated to the gills to wit... and an additional annoyance is that simple image files you receive are tagged as being a security risk and can't be opened frequently (even though you've specified a virus scanner to inspect all such receipts...)

If what you need is a basic IM facility then Trillion and Pidgin are far more adaptable, and work on multiple IM platforms...
