thats what im talking about the whole time - there is NO optimization button/tool in win7, so do i need to issue the trim command manually somehow?
I already made mention in post #6 that Windows TRIMs the drive automatically. You don't need to do anything.

I think there might be some confusion with Windows 10 users because it's called "optimize and defrag." It's not "defraging" anything unless it's a platter drive, only invoking the TRIM command in the case of a SSD/flash-based hard drive. In Windows 10 you can force it though with the "optimize" button.

does it still do the trim thing automatically in win7 if the defrag option/schedule is disabled? (as you are not supposed to defrag an ssd)

Windows 7's defrag is only for HDD's, you don't have control over TRIM. When Windows 7 is installed to an SSD, it enables TRIM and will automatically run. There is no way to really manually run it other that literally letting it idle at the welcome screen or when you delete stuff, it should auto-trim afterwards. Even so, there is nothing built in Win7 that allows you to manually run it or even shows much info. The only interaction is you can either turn it on or off.

I have a few computers running 2000, XP, Vista and 7 and what I do is just use a Windows To Go usb with Windows 10 installed and just boot that and trim all my drives, including 7 just to help it out a bit :P

All my drives are SSDs and NVMe's.

(you could use Rufus or Flashboot to create the Windows To Go usb) That way you can manually trim everything! Lol ;P

Check your SSD manufacturer for software that may allow you to do a manual TRIM.
