Drag and copy has changed to move and copy

For years I've copied an Excel sheet from the desktop to a USB stick by pointing at the icon, left click and hold to pick it up and moving it to the same folder on the USB stick I've always done. That would copy the file from DT to the stick. But now without changing anything instead of copying it it moves it. I do this multiple times a day and it's always copied in the past. If I right click and choose copy then move the pointer to the stick and click paste that works.

I'm running Windows 7 home on a desktop PC.

There are two possible ways the default action could be changed.

One is for the default action for an individual folder by editing its default.ini.....

...the other is changing the global default action in the registry. This is a Ten Forums tutorial, but it should apply to Win7 too.
