    Windows Live Messenger 2009 Freezes

Hey guys I'm new here, it's just that I don't frequent these places too much bothering with my little issues and try to solve them by myself but this time I can't find an explanation to what's going on my laptop

My problem is that every time when I'm chatting with someone in Windows Live Messenger 2009 (Build 14.0.8089.726) which came preinstalled in my brand new ASUS laptop a few weeks ago , but the issue started a few days ago. So the problem is that every time I'm having a conversation with someone and I try to open the little window for choosing a wink or emoticon to send, Windows Live Messenger completely freezes for over a minute and doesn't let me choose a wink or emoticon to send , then while it's freezed I open the Task Manager to see what's happening and the CPU is on 5-10% usage and the ram in on 23% usage. So I don't get the freezing/lagging...

My laptop specs are the following :

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 @ 2.13Ghz
    4GB of RAM (DDR2 800mhz)
    320GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M 1GB of VRAM

    Thx in advance guys

How about removing MSN Messenger and then reinstalling it via Windows Live...?

I can't really think what could cause this. Presumably the laptop is only running one HD? I'm just wondering if power settings could be causing a lag while the disk spins up from a snooze. You can check the power settings in Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change plan settings -> Change advanced power settings -> Hard disk.

nikey, I'm experiencing exactly the same thing! and judging by the other topics google brought up we're not the only ones

I installed win7 a few weeks ago and everything has been running smoothly until yesterday, when windows live messenger started acting up in exactly the way you describe it.
After a >30sec freeze at startup, msn freezes every few seconds while typing and even longer at every action I try to perform (opening a conversationwindow, menu items, smileymenu,...). With wlm running my CPU is idling at 3-4% and memory use stays at a constant 40%.

I've tried every sollution I could find, from un- and reinstalling wlm to disabling the ssdp discovery service and fondling with the compatibility settings of msnmsgr.exe and swithching off all energysaving options: nothing worked.
The last thing I tried was the only thing that seemed to have some effect: I uninstalled wlm and manually deleted all files related to it. For about 30mins it worked like a charm, but when I closed the one conversationwindow I was using together with mediaplayer and some folder, it went back to square one.

I haven't installed any software during the past week, so that doesn't seem to be the cause. Anyone?

Yup, It has been almost 4 weeks since the problem started, but just 3 or 4 days after I posted my problem here in the forum, suddenly one day the issue stopped and wlm got back to work normally, no lag, no freezes, I don't have idea why this happened, after no-one answering nor having a clue about what was happening in my computer I gave up and tried no to send any wink/emoticon, but then one day everything went back to normal, so don't know what happened or why it fixed itself...give it a few days , maybe it will fix by itself too, cheers and good luck!

thanks for your reply, but as you said the problem fixed itself for me too about 3 days after it started. Very strange, but I'm glad I don't have to find an alternative for wlm :)
