I'm not sure why this thread is marked solved. It definitely hasn't been solved, you can sift through your songs and remove the perpetrators by using dos or some other program that doesn't use the microsoft explorer to view files, but those mp3's cause explorer, wmp, wmpnetworkshare service, open dialogs etc to still crash which I would consider quite an unsolved issue, an X-File if you will...

I have established that my problem file is not artists folders A - K,
so now I am systematically moving folders back into the music folder and letting WMP update its library one letter of the alphabet at a time.
I was having this problem too, rather than tediously going through my collection bit by bit here's an easier method:

  1. Get Process Explorer
  2. When media player hangs just leave it on the screen in it's crashed state.
  3. Open processexplorer, go to "Find Handle or DLL"
  4. Search for "mp3" (no quotes)
  5. You should see the process wmplayer.exe and at least one handle to an mp3 file in your collection.
  6. Delete said file from your collection (you'll have to close the crashed media player to allow the file to be deleted).
  7. Rinse and repeat until Media Player no longer crashes

Windows 7

This is my first reply to anything in this Forum but i figured out how to fix it on my computer so I thought I would share. It look's like it was a corrupt mf.dll

you can find it by going to C:\windows\system32\mf.dll

you will need to take ownership of the file to replace it which I am not going to tell every one how to do. If you can't figure it out you probably shouldn't be messing around with the system32 file.

Since this is a topic for windows 64bit I will post the link I found for it but if you are on 32 bit find your matching one because versions matter here.

64 bit only

Any ways I hope this helps some one because I spent a couple of hours figuring this out.
