Running older progs in Win 7

    Hi

I've just got a new laptop (HP DM3) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Great except one small issue with a programme I have for installing fire alarm software. When I tried to install the programme windows gives the message:

"THe version is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check to see if you need an x86 (32 bit) or x64 (64 bit)".

I'm guessing as it was written for XP it needs the 32 bit. Is their any way I can run this in Win 7 as I am sure the alarm company won't have written any new software yet.

    Cheers, Ron

Don't know, but maybe the alarm company needs a fire lit under them.

There are some (few) programs that will not work on 64bit. Probably, yours is one. The fire dept, is not updating software very often. If it were just a XP problem you could run in compatiablity mode.

I have the same problem with Adobe Pagemaker 6.5. I haven't found any solution but I'm still looking.

Some 32 bit software uses a 16 bit installer, which is incompatible with Win7 X64.

There may be work-arounds for that. Unless the software you're using is popular, you will have to contact the vendor for advice. (May be a good idea, even if it is popular.)
