I installed my Dragon 10.1 on my new Windows 7 laptop. I had bought 10.1 a year or so in preparation for buying the Windows 7 machine. It installed fine but when I turned Dragon it told me that I needed to "train" which it offered me the opportunity to do. When I clicked "GO" in the read box it didn't register my headset microphone. I could hear through the headset very well. I then tried two more headsets, none of which registered. I then uninstalled and re-installed the software and got the exact same results. The software and headsets work well on my work XP machine. What am I missing?

Welcome to the Seven Forums Mike
From what I have read 10.1 should work fine with Windows 7. Have you tried to use the microphone on sound recorder to see if it works? Did you go to the sound properties and see if the microphone is turned on? If so then you may want to go here and ask.

I have been trying to find the most appropriate thread for my question concerning Drag. Nat. Spk v11. This seems to be the most on point. If not please advise and I will open new topic.

Anyhow, here is my situation. The rig using Dragon is an HP DV7-4270us AMD Quad 640GB HDD 4GB DDR3 RAM running Win 7 x64. I have trimmed my running processes down to 51 including Firefox, Diskeeper, biometrics, and Bluetooth, Rocket Dock, Acronis scheduler, sidebar, etc. Even with all that my rig runs sweet.

Enter Nuance. I had no problems with install. My problem is with Windows 7 memory management. Upon installing Dragon and initial employment of same the da_n thing told me that it required my system to have 4GB of RAM for full functionality. Considering that although I do have 4GB installed (2x2GB SODIMM) the way Windows 7 utilizes and allocates memory leaves me showing only 3322MB total. 4096MB Installed, 3322 Total, 1561 Cached, 1627 Available

Has anyone else experienced this problem ? Is there a workaround (such as stopping all non essential services and processes). Granted that RAM is relatively inexpensive. It just pi$$3s me off that someone with a new and up to date rig should HAVE TO upgrade their RAM so soon.

I have been running Win 7 since first beta and have come to love and appreciate it. Yet the way it utilizes and allocates RAM still seems a catch 22.

I have several thousand hours experience with earlier versions of Dragon and can tell you that speech recognition is very intensive and benefits from both CPU horsepower and RAM.

Having said that, I used to get excellent results with Dragon 9, with 2 gigs of RAM on Windows XP and Vista--with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 processor, vintage 2006.

    Are you getting error messages?

    Does Dragon "work"?

Do you have prior experience with it?

It takes some time and training to get speech recognition to respond well---proper enunciation and experience with the appropriate voice commands.

Any speech recognition system will benefit from a minimum of competing processes and running applications.

More details needed. What are your specific complaints?

Dragon should perform very well on a 4 GB RAM system, assuming the processor is reasonably stout and you are not trying to do a bunch of other stuff simultaneously.

I am in the Intel camp and so have no idea about the CPU power you have available with that AMD processor.

Sorry to hear that you are in the Intel camp. Just joking.

The issue at hand is. That according to Dragons own posted system requirements V11 should run on windows 7 (x86 or x64) with a minimum of 2GB RAM. Optimum would be 4GB.

{My rig has an AMD Quad Core @1.8Mhz./core with 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM, running Win 7 x64} Granted that a laptops graphics share memory but still. There is no reason that I can fathom why Dragon v11 would not detect that I already have 4GB installed. It seems as if it is only detecting the available RAM or that it is not fully compatible with 64bit. Granted that I intend to upgrade to 8GB DDR3 1600. But I didn't want to have to spend the $55-$65 on that yet. Nor do I feel that I should have to. Yet I am not willing to spend that kind of money for their software only to have reduced functionality.

Therefore I wondered if any other Win 7 users have had the same or similar experiences with Dragon.

The reason I am not willing to part with the money for the RAM right now is that I am building a new desktop. That money is the difference between 8GB of RAM and 16GB. I mean. Who would want to have an 8 core rig with ONLY 8GB ?

    I'm confused.

Why do you care whether Dragon "detects" that you have 4 GB of RAM?

Does it install and work or doesn't it?

You state that Dragon itself says it should run with 2 GB. You have 4 GB.

    What's the problem?

OK. Let me rephrase this. Dragon Naturally Speaking has informed me (as the program was initializing) that it (the program) would NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE FULL {advanced}FUNCTIONALITY !!! As I was attempting to use it (the program) I discovered that it (the program) was indeed NOT providing full {advanced} functionality.

The reason (as reported by the program{Dragon Naturally Speaking} ) is that I need to have 4GB of RAM installed. Since I obviously was unclear in my earlier posts. Let me reiterate that I do indeed have 4GB of RAM installed.

Having checked the minimum requirements on Nuances own website, the minimum requirements state. RAM: minimum 1 GB for Windows XP and Windows Vista, and 2 GB for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003/2008. We recommend 2 GB RAM for Windows XP and Windows Vista, and 4 GB for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003/2008 64-bit.

Now imagine my frustration when I am informed that I CAN NOT enjoy the benefits of FULL (advanced) functionality.

I am here to inquire of others if they may have experienced the same thing. Are you using v11 ? Is your rig running 64 bit OS ? How much RAM do you have installed ? If you are running more than 4GB of RAM you would not have encountered this problem I would assume. Likewise if you have not installed v11. Correct ?

I was just hypothesizing that perhaps D.N.S v11 is not correctly detecting the installed RAM and is instead detecting the available RAM instead. Which (due to the way RAM is dealt with by Windows 7 [and Vista for that matter]) would result in D.N.S. v11 incorrectly assuming that there was insufficient RAM causing it to turn off the advanced functionality. I was also querying whether or not it could be a 64 bit compatibility issue.

Thank you in advance for any light you may be able to shed on the situation. P.S. I have already uninstalled and returned D.N.S. v11 to the store. I will use v10 until I figure out what is going on (hopefully) or I upgrade to 8GB RAM. Like I said I am trying to put the money together to build a new rig. AMD Zambesi 8 core processors don't come cheap. $279 That $150 from returning D.N.S. will be going to a far far better place.

    Gunny:

I have not used Dragon 11. I used Dragon 9 on Vista 32 bit with 2 Gigs RAM, successfully. But that is neither here nor there.

What "full advanced functionality" is missing? You state that you discovered that it was indeed not providing full advanced functionality. Or are you simply relying on some sort of on-screen message from Dragon and have not personally experienced any reduced functionality?

What can't you do that you would like to do?

What shortcomings, if any, are you actually experiencing with 4 GB of RAM?

I don't know the answer to your question regarding recognition of your entire 4 GB.

But I wouldn't worry about it until and unless I could ID a Dragon capability that I could not carry out with your currently installed 4 GB.

Dragon takes up a lot of resources, so you are best advised to shut down other significant apps (Word, Excel, anything that eats into resources) when running it. All the more so if you have a marginal (relatively puny) machine.

I'd guess you would see only slight improvements if you went to 8 GB. A CPU upgrade would likely help more, but as I said I don't know how strong that AMD processor is compared to Intel processors.

Regarding Dragon versions: I would suspect you gain little to nothing by getting the latest version. Instead, I would get the oldest version that is known to be Windows 7 compatible, and as you say, used the saved money toward your new machine.

    Semper Fi.

I have had no problem with D.N.S. v10. home on this machine. I was wanting the v11 for the improved accuracy of the voice recognition engine. I was wanting v11 for the enhanced editing and extra shortcuts. These are the advanced features I have been referring to. As for the AMD processor. It is 4 cores, each running at 1.8Ghz per core ( see AMD Phenom II N960 . Bus speed of 199.5 with a multiplier of 9) . And yes, i attempted to use the extra voice shortcuts and they did not work. I have every confidence that additional RAM will solve the problem. I was just curious as to whether or not I was the first or only person to experience this issue. As well as being peeved with Nuance. Also I have to admit that I am a DUMMY. I did not try to install and run in XP mode.

Please give this no further attention. I will still monitor this thread. Just to see if anything further develops.
I thank you for your interest and efforts. When I can afford the v11 again and the RAM upgrade, I will re-post with my experience. I will say this though. From what I did experience of v11 it seemed much improved. the vox training was outstanding and the accuracy seemed to be much improved.
