Installed Win Messenger (XP) on Win 7, but its missing

I installed the Windows Messenger 5.xx (originally came with windows xp) on my windows 7 pro computer but it is currently missing, ie not in the program files folder.

Back in windows xp, i could have both the original windows messenger and the msn-turned-to windows LIVE messenger open at the same time. However, in windows 7, after installing the windows (original) messenger, i can't even find the exe file.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Is it listed under programs and features. i.e., add/remove programs?

Mine shows under Windows Live folder in Start menu.

When I tried to sign up with my msn messenger, it required the latest version of it, so I've just downloaded it. Maybe it's overwrited by the new version or something. I'm not sure that you can run older version of it, except maybe with changing its compatibility settings.
Starting today, users on version 8.5 will also be required to upgrade before they can sign-in to the service....

Windows live comes with Windows update too. I did install it from there. I believe it shows under optional updates.

current version is 14. you should always keep your software up to date. you do not loose anything going form the 5.x to the 14.x.

Do you need to seperate ID's signed in at the same time?
If so, check out a good alternative IM program, Digsby. You can add multiple accounts from the same im service and also different im services.

You got the idea totally wrong. In case you didn't know, Windows Messenger 5.x came with windows xp and was the alternate version of MSN Messenger. 5.x was also the very last version of it, there are no other newer versions.
Windows Live Messenger 14.x or whatsoever is actually the latest MSN Messenger but renamed to have the "windows live" word in its name.

Windows Messenger 5.x (note the lack of the word "live") and Windows Live Messenger 14.x are two different programs. As such, I was able to run BOTH as separate programs and log into TWO different msn accounts (one on each) at the SAME time, when I was still using Windows XP.

However, when I started using Windows 7 Pro and installed Windows Messenger 5.x, it doesn't appear at all, not even in the "Remove Programs" in the Control Panel.

WLM is the direct decedent of MSN (I still call it MSN). Why would you want such an antiquated version of MSN? Its very basic and missing loads of useful features and security updates.

If you insist on using it, you could install XP Mode and use it in there.

then someone goofed somewhere along the line, because one was meant to replace the other. it was never meant for people to keep running the older version. as for wanting the latest version before allowing you to sign-in yes it is talking about live messenger. microsoft has been wanting to get rid of the older versions for along, long time. the only difference between the versions is the name and newer features, and better security. just because you can run both at the same time means nothing. i can think of dozens programs that i can run the older version alongside the newest version. as for logging-in in more than one location you can now do that with messenger without multiple copies of messenger running. you will just get asked if you want to stay logged-in at the other location. now i'm no microsour fan, however on this one for the added security alone i completely agree with their approach.

edit:

even the link messenger pointed you to says windows live messenger, which is msn live messenger.
