Cannot Install Software Since Upgrading to Windows 7

Please help--since upgrading to Windows 7 I cannot install any new software, drivers, updates, pretty much anything. The installer quits and I receive an error message, typically 2503 or 2502.

I have checked my date and it is correct, and I have tried using the Administrator login, but the same thing happens.

I am extremely frustrated and would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

If you did an "in place" upgrade then it's not likely to be easily fixed. Most here won't do in place upgrade because it's not often you get a smooth transition. Most would say wipe the drive and do a clean install(there's instructions how to do this with an upgrade disc if you search.) But I have had good luck with a "Custom" install that you run while in Windows. It gathers up all the stuff in the system directories and Program Files and puts it in Windows.old folder.

I think the only time I made a straight upgrade install work in Windows was putting Win95 on top of Win 3.1.

Yes--I installed the RC over the installation of Vista which came with my laptop, then purchased Win 7. It activated without any problem. The RC worked just fine, by the way--all of the problems began after the upgrade.

I would do a clean install but am concerned that I do not have the serial number to two of my frequently used programs--Office 2007 and Acrobat 9.

But the current situation is impossible....

Eureka--there is my Office serial number. Well done, thanks. Acrobat I can get from Adobe as a registered user I assume.

So, do I take it that there is no fix for the installer refusing to work? Is this problem common with upgrades?

I have not done any upgrades from Vista to Rc to Retail.

Only 7 upgrades from RC to Retail with no problems. So not sure what we are looking for here just yet.

On another forum someone wrote that "manually setting the permissions on the windows/ installer folder" fixed a similar problem. Can you tell me how to do this, please?
