I installed this latest version today and boom.... it installed Avast Antivirus. I was surprised and tried to uninstall it using Revo Uninstaller Pro. It went through all the motions but finally avast the pest remained even though it was removed from its list.
Tried to restore the system to a previous date 13 Dec 17. System Restore failed stating some incompatible Antivirus is preventing restoration and asking to be rerun after disabling that antivirus. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes Antimalware . Which one?
I was getting mad and irritable ( my wife and daughter bore the brunt ). Tried to get rid of the Avast folder in C drive. Oh! I need to be an administrator. Invoked my higher powers but no, not enough. Again some incompatible antivirus overriding my administrative prowess.
Made a google search and avastclear was the answer Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal. Ok Safe mode. I started banging F8 key as the system booted to no avail. Entered msconfig and made changes in the boot tab to enter safe mode and ran avastclear and it started clearing all the junk it had dumped and ended with a warning that I have an incompatible antivirus. It named it too - Microsoft Security essentials.
In any case avast gone finally after driving me nuts. Now CCleaner Free of avast.
( I sure like many others missed unchecking Install Avast on the first screen)

jumanji - a Macrium Reflect image would have had you back to a "pre Avast" condition in minutes and saved you all that hassle.
As for myself - I won't be updating CCleaner past version 5.35.6210 (while I'm using Windows 7 at least).
I don't use installers for years, unless I do not have any other option, portable versions only. CC had portable version, if no more, try uniextract and copy ccleaner.exe only. If it doesn't work in portable mode I won't use it anymore. BTW I thought it was installing chrome? or is that the newest version I have not seen yet?
The 5.38 Portable and Slim versions are now available on the CCleaner download page.
Cannot begin you going nuts Jumanji and mate an easy way of getting rid of that sort of crap is just use the regediit and delete the ***** entries whatever they happen to be as I have found that even using unistall tools they still leave remnants in the reg.In any case avast gone finally after driving me nuts
In any case I use this Unchecky - Keeps your checkboxes clear save all that grief
