Getting rid of "extract..." context menu item in windows 7

I installed 7-zip to handle compressed files which makes the windows 7 build in one redundant. But I can't seem to get rid of the "extract..." context menu entry. It only appears when right click dragging. What are the required registry modifications? Thanks.

Nello Nailertn, and welcome to Seven Forums.

7-Zip has an option to set for this. To do so: :)
    • Use Run as administrator on 7-Zip
    • In 7-Zip, click on Tools (Menu bar) and Options.
    • In Options, click on the 7-Zip tab, uncheck the option(s) you do not want, and click on OK.

    Hope this helps,

    Hello Brink,

I am aware of 7-zip's context menu customization feature and have already set it up the way I want it. The problem is it does not remove the original "extract..." entry that is associated with the built in program. So when I right click drag I have two menu entries related to extracting, one for 7-zip and one that's there by default. I would like to disable the second. Sorry if my original post wasn't specific enough.

    Ah, ok.

You could associate 7-Zip to be the default program to open that file extension (ex: .zip) to remove "Extract All..." for the built-in ZIP handler in Windows. You can do this in the same area above, but in the System tab instead.

Otherwise, you could also use the REG file below to remove "Extract All..." from the context menu for the built-in ZIP handler in Windows. I include a REG file to restore it if you should wish to in the future. You would just need to download and merge the REG file, then approve to do so. :)

Unfortunately all the file associations under system are already checked and the reg file you provided did not solve the issue. Initially I tried deleting CompressedFolder\ShellEx\DropHandler since the item is only there after right click drag but that didn't help either. I attached a registry export of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\7-Zip.zip and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CompressedFolder as well as screenshots of my 7-Zip settings to give a clear picture of what is going on. (Restored CompressedFolder to its original state after trying your modifications.)

Hmm, it looks like you are using an older version of 7-Zip. I'm using the 9.27 alpha version at the top right corner at the link below. You might install it to see how it does for you.

Using 7-Zip 9.20 which is the latest release version, tried 9.27 alpha too but nothing changed. I will try to mess around with ShellExView and winrar / winzip to see if they make other registry changes. Nonetheless if you have any other ideas please do share, and thanks for the replies so far.

Figured out, for future reference this needs to be removed:
    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\ShellEx\DragDropHandlers\{BD472F60-27FA-11cf-B8B4-444553540000}]
It points to a right drag handler for compressed folders. Thanks for your help again Brink!
