Try Imgburn.

Here's the cnet download link as a few users were mentioning problems with some of the mirror sites on the Imgburn web site.

There are tons of free converters there.

Some of the ones I use regularly:

AVStoDVD
DVD Flick
FAVC

all 3 will input .avi or .mkv files and convert to DVD5 DVD9 or custom DVD size.
There are a bunch of others too with user comments.

edit: once you have a VIDEO_TS folder, then just burn with Imgburn.

Apparently Ashampoo Burning Studio Free isn't bad, it's a stripped down version of the heavyweight program.

some good video burning software?
I need a software that can burn video easily to DVD while maintaining its original aspect ratio. For me Windows DVD Makers burns 16:9 videos with borders around the screen and nero 10 is confusing.

Burning software?
I want to back up my DVD's. With XP I would use DVD Shrink and Nero 6. Will I need both of those with 7? Will I have to get the newest version of Nero for 7 or does 7 have its own burning program? Thanks.

Good Free App that mounts ISO images? Problems burning too.
Can someone recommend a good FREE ISO program for W7? Particularly one that will allow the mounting of multiple DVD's for installing large programs. As well, I have trouble with the built in burner - I am using DVD -R discs and get an error every time and the DVD tray spits it out - I try it...
