    Dvd Ripping

    Hi

    I have a large collection of Dvd Movies, Music Dvds and Tv series that i own, I would like to rip my movies to Avi and my Music Dvds to copy as vob files to hardrive, and my tv series to copy to avi in seperate episodes.
    I would like to know what is the best software out there to do this. It doesnt matter if its free software or software that i need to purchase, just one that will give me the best quality.
    It would be a bonus if it ripped and copied Blu-Ray as well, but not essential.
    Any help appreciated

    Thanks
    Cliff

    You just have to be careful its not illegal. Try DVD decrypter, DVD fab or handbrake they all work well.

    Hi all
    DVDSHRINK to get DVD on to "Single layer" 4.7 GB DVD

    (You can leave DVD's as full "un-shrunk" ISO's of 7.9 GB etc if you want -- you don't have to SHRINK the DVD - but in general all I want on a DVD is just the movie not all the extra features etc etc).

    This will call DVD Decrypter to "De regionalize" and decrypt the DVD

    You can either make an ISO (also saveable to HDD and use somethng like Alcohol 52% - FREE to mount it and play it) or burn to a backup "Ordinary DVD" or save as files.

    If you use RipIT4ME this program calls both DVDSHRINK and DVDDECRYPTER so you can easily backup your DVD's.

    DVDSHRINK gives you rip choice options -- I find even when played back on a full upscaling DVD player and a 40 inch LCD TV the quality is fine.

    I save the DVD's as ISO's on a portable USB HDD. If I want to play it on the TV then I burn the ISO on to a DVD +RW DVD. Works fine.

    However with Virtual mount (Alcohol 52%) I'm looking at STREAMING the Video to the TV so I don't need to bother any more with physical DVD's.

    Note this doesn't work for BLU RAY -- encryption still too complex but IMO the difference between BLU RAY and a fully upscalable 1080p isn't worth the extra investment in gear and yet another medium.

    Ripit4ME ==> RipIt4Me - Download

    DvdDecrypter ===> DVD Decrypter

    DvdShrink ===> Download DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 - DVD Shrink - A FREE software to backup DVD disks ! - Softpedia

    Alcohol 52% Free ===> Download

    Thanks for your replies guys :)

    I have been playing around with dvd fab for the last couple of hours, and find it quite good. Is there any disadvantage of using dvd fab, regarding quality or anything else, or is there any advantages that dvd shrink has over dvdfab ?

    Thanks
    Again

    Hi there
    like all these things it's impossible to check everything out.

    If your application works fine and does what you want it to do then use it.

    Just check of course if you want to "Archive" commercial DVD's which are usually Dual Layer and larger than 4.7GB then your software can handle the archive size when you want to play them.

    I like my combination as I can back up the DVD to standard media 4.7 DVD media and the quality is still just fine even on a 40 inch LCD HDTV.

    I save as 4.7 GB ISO's which I can temprarily burn to a DVD+RW disc if I want to play it on a standard DVD player. Using a DVD+RW disc means you can re-use it several times.

    I think also when backing up DVD's is a good time to "De-regionalize" and De-crypt them too.

    Cheers

    Why do you want to rip your dvds to avi? That would be a lossy process because you would be compressing the original upto about 6 times, and also depends on what ripper you use. Reconverting the avi to dvd will NOT recover the original dvd quality. So if your original dvds get scratched or lost, you'll be stuck with inferior quality avi's.

    Depending upon how much internal/external hard disk space you have available, save your dvds as iso's. The single layer ones would be about 4.7 gb each. For the dual layer ones, use DVD shrink and DVD decrypter, as suggested above to cut down the size to about 4.7 gb. If you dont have that much space, at least convert to a high quality container like MKV instead of using crappy avi.

    For audio cds/dvds, rip to at least 192 kbps mp3 or wmv. You can also try lossless FLAC but mp3 are the most widely playable.
