    odbc

could the odbc be used to tell windows how to surf the internet safely? to look for scripts in media/images/controls that could be malicious or cause unwanted or unintended behavior of hardware?

No, here is a definition of ODBC What is ODBC? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary

Install Firefox and get the AdBlock Plus and NOScript addons. Thats the safest way.

theoretically speaking this is the same thing. in the same way that alien changes .deb packages to .rpm or visa versa in order to prevent incompatibility prompts and issues. The difference here is that on linux security outrite says no, as if there were an adblocker or blacklist filter that recognized the extension of the file and immunized the operating system from it, versus a virus bypassing like code which gives a platform for "compatability or security". at least that is what i'm hearing, but i was on haldol a couple months back so...

ODBC has nothing to do with "to tell windows how to surf the internet safely"... Where did you get this crazy idea?

Theoretically speaking it is not the same thing. ODBC has to to with databases and SQL. It has nothing to do with surfing the internet. Did you read link supplied by ccatlett1984? This link clearly explains the function of ODBC.

hmmm....first off no need to be rude. if you don't want to converse the material I posted kindly ignore. I have crap cleaner on my pc already thanks.

And obviously you've not read what I stated in intellectual terms.

database=scripts, files, programs, data, general information amalgamated into one location for access. Said data is of variety (m) where m=my flavor. it's quite possible, you know the grey poupon saying.

    ;-) thanks for the input.

You technically could compile a database to check against KNOWN exploit scripts, and file extensions that you don't want to run. That could be hooked into a web browser to check what should be allowed to run, vs not. This would be next to impossible to update based on day to day exploits that are found. The best way is to block everything and only allow what you trust is safe. IE. The NoScript add-on for Firefox.

ODBC is a "bridge" between your ODBC compatible app and an ODBC compatible Database, so ODBC does NOT contain any database - it's a bridge... I'm posting politely, it is a crazy idea. I ask you, since it's a bridge - how exactly do you make it detect "scripts"? It can't even store ANYTHING, it's a bridge between app and database server, an abstraction layer.

It was not my intention to be rude and I apologize if my post came across that way. I was attempting to be emphatic. I do know how to rude...
