The right-click context menu and 7-Zip

Although I am on winXP (32-bit ... just tried it to sort out my DPC Latency issues), I also had the same experience:

- I installed 7-zip (latest ver at the time), but, there was no context menu ... very annoying indeed

- I re-installed the same version, but, this time I used the "Run As" option and unchecked the "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" ... this time the context menu was there ...

(I was using an Administartor account at both times)

I had got same problem.

I checked 7-zip.dll in "C:\Program Files\7-Zip". But there wasn't it.

So I downloaded 7-zip.dll and copy it into there.

Then you should restart explorer.exe.

Hi. I recently experienced the same problems with non-display of cascading right-click context menu for 7-ZIP (from Windows Explorer Shell Extension)...but I'm running Windows XP SP3 (32-bit).

As it turns out, the problem was caused by another program I recently installed on my system called FileMenu Tools.

In case anyone is interested, I was able to isolate the problem using an explorer shell extension utility program called Fast Explorer 2008, which allows one to view all the active and inactive context menu handlers for all explorer shell extensions, and to selectively enable/disable individual context menu handlers. After I disabled one of the context menu handlers associated with FileMenu Tools, my 7-ZIP cascading context menu items properly displayed. :)

This is strange - i have the 64 bit version, i installed it and had the same problem. It was in fact in the x86 directory! I uninstalled, installed again, (same .exe) and it installed in the RIGHT folder... wtf... But no icons now... :|

Solved! I had the same problem. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate (x64 bit version). If you got 7-Zip from Download.com, then you are using the x32 bit version. Go directly to the 7-Zip website and download the x64 bit version, and it will appear in your right click menu upon restarting your computer.
(Don't forget to uninstall the other 7-Zip!)

i downloaded mine straight from 7-zip's website. I have NO idea why it would install 32 bit as the download is a 64 bit. I simply uninstalled and reinstalled (this time paying attention to the path) and it correctly installed. Perhaps i used "typical" settings or something the first time.

The icons problem - i allow the program to run as admin, then go into the settings and select file associations.

I had the exact same problem with 7 zip and it was solved by reading this thread.

Drove me nuts for days.

Hi Guys,
Like most of you, I'm running a 64 bit version of Win 7 Home Premium, though this solution will apply to all Win 7 versions.
I was experiencing the same issue getting the right click context menu to show 7-Zip when using a 32 bit file manager, in my case PowerDesk 7. Using PD7 is the equivalent of running "explorer *32" in a 64 bit environment. The shell context menu extension of the 64 bit version of 7-Zip only works with 64 bit programs, so when using "explorer.exe" (the 64 bit version in Win 7 64 bit) the 7-Zip right click extension will show up. It will not show up in a 32 bit program such as PowerDesk 7 or "explorer *32" (have alook in Windows Task Manager - Processes tab to see the all the "xxxxxxx *32" programs that are running in your 64 bit environment).

The solution to this is very simple. Just install the 32 bit version of 7-Zip AS WELL AS the 64 bit version. The 64 bit version installs neatly into ....\Program Files\7-Zip\ while the 32 bit version installs neatly to ....\Program Files (x86)\7-Zip\.
Once you have both versions installed, you will see the right click 7-Zip menu whether using a 32 or 64 bit program.

Hope this fixes the problem for most of you. All the suggestions for configuring how 7-Zip works for you in the various posts above can still be applied.
