cannot save a .pdf file with Internet Explorer 8 in Windows 7

I can only save 1 or 2 .pdf documents from my brokerage website before the 'save' button in the imbedded A(dobe)R(eader) doesn't work anymore. When I try the recommended fix of 'unchecking' Display pdf in browser", IE blocks the download; when I click to allow the download, IE reloads the 'source' website and does NOT load, or save, the pdf file I'm trying to save. I've tried the solutions on AR's website to no avail. As an aside: I do not have AR listed in my 'add-ons'; only Adobe PDF Link Helper and Shockwave Flash Object - does this matter?

Theog. Actually I thought hondochica’s question was reasonable. I assume that the answer is going to be something like.

In IE8 go to tools/options/ blah blah and uncheck whosit.

ccatlett1984, while you actually tried to help, having to install extra software is a patch and not the answer.

I’m sorry to have offended two very knowledgeable, senior members, but I have quite a bit of experience with computers and I am grumpy that this annoying problem has already taken a lot of my time. Especially, since usually it is something that I did to cause it.

I am using a new HP dv6, fully updated, with lots of bells and whistles.

I first noticed that I could no longer save pdf bank statements that I could open in IE8, but none of several “normal ways of saving the file to my hdd” worked at all. I would tell it to save, but no dialog opened asking me where or what file name. I assumed that my bank’s generally terrible website had decided to not let me save them and some of their telephone help people agreed.

The suggestion to tell it you want to print it, but then save that… did not work either. I have been saving pdf files the “normal way” for 15 years, but recently it did not work on my bank’s website.

BUT, I kept trying and Google-ing and looking at Adobe, ESET and so on. And I discovered that my old Win XP Pro 32bit, IE8 not updated for months, computer could do it just fine, but not my other new ASUS UL50 with Win 7 Pro 64bit, IE8 with the latest updates. So, is it Bill Gates? Or my ESET SmartSecurity? Rod Serling?

So, I found this thread. But, in writing this question, I was trying things and… Now it works!

I have not changed any settings that I know of, but both the ASUS & HP now say, “What problem? I don’t see a problem.”

So, since I assume that it will return, any suggestions on, “Check these settings.” Would be nice. But, “Reload all your software from the original disks.” Will be ignored. Thanks either way for reading this far.

I have run into this problem myself and found out that the only solution is to run IE 8 as "administrator". Right click on your IE 8 icon, then right click on "Internet Explorer", then left click on "Run As Administrator". Answer "Yes" to the pop-up. Once the browser opens go to your web site and pull up the PDF file. You should be able to click on "File" and "Save a copy" successfully.
