Corrupt disk after trying to print???

I have a 1tb portable hard drive (WD My Passport SE) with backup data on it.

I was working on a project (self-designed Cisco network case study) which involved several visio drawings. I would like to print these to my default printer. So, I right click on all of them and click print. I have done this sort of thing before. Only one prints, visio crashes and the printer print the rest as blank. So, I try to open the other drawings. Visio pops up a window saying it will open the the drawings as read only. They are now blank. And the date modified for those drawings are identical as today when I originally tried to print them.

I attempt to recover them using testdisk. No luck, however, the program reports that the disk has a corrupt backup sector. All attempts to copy over the sector with testdisk fail. So, I decide to run chkdsk in repair mode.

As I do this, chkdsk begins to "repair" the security indices on every file on the disk and inserting them with default security ids. Last time I saw this, the files were corrupted beyond recovery.

This disk is the data backup for a laptop (including an easy transfer wizard file), contains an extensive music library (which can be recreated from libraries on several computers), and all files pertaining to my project.

The chkdsk is still running, but I am figuring that all the data on the drive is lost. The data backup was the most crutial as I can recreate the lost drawings from the only drawing printout.

What on earth happened that could have caused this problem? Is there any way to fix this? Or am I out of luck here?

Chkdisk was the absolute worst thing you could have done, save for formatting the drive. It is going to take any "bad" sectors and mark them so they are never used again. The only recovery software that will be able to read those sectors is software that can directly access the hard disk. Format the drive, do not do a "quick format" then run a chkdisk and let it try to recover bad sectors.

chkdsk did not ruin any data on the drive...just folder permissions (default folders to read-only). My earlier problem with my visio drawings still exists.
