I think both McAfee Site advisor and Norton Safe Surfing both blacklist a site if they have recently had infected downloads.
Norton identified a number of instances. One is enough to avoid the site until they clean their act up.

People have talked about the need to just use "commonsense" surfing. Here is an example where a site advisory function is useful.

    ReRun

Here's another Hotkey I wrote called ReRun. It sits in the tray and watches the active window. If it detects a program, it adds the icon to a Most Recently Used set of 10 Buttons.

The idea is if you close a program that's tough to dig out, not in your QuickLaunch or other launcher, Superbar etc.. and want to bring it up again, you can open the Popup Window for ReRun with a hotkey. The default hotkey is F9 function key but you can change it with a Tray Menu command. Also double clicking the Tray Icon will pop up the window.

Hovering the mouse over the icon will show the program name in a Tooltip. I try to screen out windows that are minimized to system tray etc.. but it's not perfect. It's just a rerun for recent programs. For opening programs you use constantly some other launch method is preferable.

I recommend putting a shortcut in the Startup folder so it will start with Windows as it takes awhile to fill up with apps. The collected apps are not saved between runs.

It's free for you to use at your own risk. You can download from my page here:

edit: new version 1.5.1.0 is out. Expanded buttons to 14 and other enhancements.

edit2: version 2.0 has new features like saving the command line args and working directory. Way more useful.

edit3: more enhancements. See About MsgBox for 3 ways to press the Buttons and options.
(Also you can cheat and view the Readme.txt. I won't tell anyone.) :)

MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder - MediaCoder official website

MediaCoder is a free universal media transcoder since 2005. It integrates most popular audio/video codecs and tools in an elegant and transparent manner into an all-in-one transcoding solution. With a flexible and extendable architecture, latest codecs and tools are updated added in constantly. MediaCoder intends to be the swiss army knife for media transcoding in all time.

    Features In Brief

Converting between most popular audio and video formats
    Multi-threaded transcoding and job-level parallelization
Transcoding with high performance and high quality
    Flexible control over transcoding parameters
Simplified UI for popular mobile devices (PSP, iPhone/iPod etc)
Fully standalone, no dependancy on system codecs/splitters
Hardware encoding acceleration (nVidia CUDA & Intel Media SDK)

    Typical Applications

Improving compression / reducing size for audio/video files
Converting media content for playback on multimedia devices
Converting media content for online publication or broadcasting
Extracting audio track from video files
    Ripping audio/video discs
Fixing corrupted or partial downloaded video files

    MediaCoder is Audio/Video
There's an Audio only version called AudioCoder.

Thanks and my own 2 cents

    @Brink

First, This is my first post to this forum and I want to thank you for the great list of Freeware Applications that you have assembled. Many of the apps listed are ones that I use already. I am about to try some others from the list as well.

Second, it is time to update the description of FreeCommander to include x64 bit support.

I am using FreeCommander version 2009.02b with Win 7 x64 and it works great. It even has support for 2 types of context menus by making a simple change to the freecommander.ini file (see the version history at the website). The normal x64 bit context menu is accessed by right clicking a file entry and the x32 bit version is accessed by holding the left Windows key while right clicking.

Therefore, your warning about FreeCommander running on "Windows 7 32 bit only" is now out of date. I use FreeCommander instead of Power Desk 8 (not free) because power desk will not support x64 bit context menus at all.

FreeCommander comes in two versions: the normal desktop version and the portable version which can be run from a USB Key.

Third, I would like to suggest adding the encryption software AxCrypt (AxCrypt - File Encryption for Windows | Download AxCrypt - File Encryption for Windows software for free at SourceForge.net).

This is an simple way to encrypt files which may contain sensitive data without resorting to a full drive encryption (like with TrueCrypt). AxCrypt is easily invoked from the context menu (this is one reason I like FreeCommander). AxCrypt has 128 bit encryption, multiple languages and it supports a USB key (optional).

Last, for anyone looking for more information on freeware, check out Gizmo's Freeware Site (Gizmos Freeware Reviews). He has reviews of various applications and they are categorized for easy searching.

What Gizmo's does is inveigle people into writing software reviews and then boots them out, and removes the author's signature, leaving the review as if it had been written by "Site Editor". Apart from being a violation of copyright, this is not a very nice thing to do. So anybody tempted to write any reviews for that site, be warned. I wrote a number of reviews for that site, as have others, and that is what occurred.

    JC Zorkoff,

I also use FreeCommander, but what caught my eye is that there has been an update since my 2009.02a installation. I've been trying to locate a download for it, but found nothing that didn't involve using some kind of download manager that had to be downloaded first. Do you know of a direct source for the file?

    EDIT: Nevermind, I got it.

    Here is the developer site:

    You might also like to have a look at this, it can use the Total Commander plugins, as well as being extremely versatile on its own account;
