I prefer paying for programs that actually work xD.
Instead of Avast I suggest the Onecare 90-day trial, once it has finished, you can either renew it for free (re-install) or get something better.
Most of the task solvers you need come with Windows 7 but are hidden.
To run Onecare / anything else that likes to bar windows...
Under the Compatibility tab, set Compatibility Mode to Vista RTM.

Who said these programs don't work?

That wont work unless you remove every single last trace of OneCare from your system. If you fail to do that it will see the previous installation even though you uninstalled it, and refuse to work.

In some cases, yes that is true, but often the software we recommend has better features.

Thanks for the information, but I'll stick with Avast for now and Windows Firewall which is better in 7 than it has been in previous OS's.

    OK, a couple of mentions:

    1) I know Fx and Thunderbird were mentioned, but I had to add that Fx 3.1b1 and Thunderbird 3.0a1x64 both work well in W7 - and since my profiles are on a separate disk, I was able to load right back up by using the profile manager without a hitch - other than having to install Silverlight, Flash and Shockwave again for Fx.

    2) Display Fusion - DisplayFusion: Free Multi-Monitor Desktop Wallpaper Software | Binary Fortress Software - works well (free and a paid version, but the free is well enough, and takes the desktop slide show one step further by giving you the option to use Flickr photos, *and* supports multiple monitors and separate wallpapers on each monitor.

    3) Malwarebytes AntiMalware - Malwarebytes.org - works like a champ.

More to come as I install them.

ShellExView - ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

NOTE: After installing, use compatibility mode and select the Run this program as an administrator option. This is a stand alone exe file, and does not install.

SIW works great too SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala

SIV is also excellent SIV - System Information Viewer

    - trick with this one is to right click the little wizard that appears in the Notification area - and make your selections from there.

    Also working fine are :

Malwarebytes, Rogue Remover Free, Glaryutilities, Paragon Partition Manager 9, Paragon Drive Backup 9.0 Express, Networx, Faststone Capture53, Faststone Image Viewer.

John, thanks for reminding me about ToolTipFixer, I'd forgotten about that one and use it in both XP and Vista.

Whilst not free I can report that Diskeeper 2009 Professional (Defrag) works fine in Windows 7. I prefer it to Auslogics as it is has many more features.
