Need Zip Help
Hello,How does Windows 7 handle zip files. Years ago I used Winzip. It did what it was supposed to and I didn't have to know anything. I guess it extracted all and put everything in the right place, and I was able to move on. It wasn't free and I felt guilty about using it even though it just kept on working. I uninstalled it and tried several others. Never liked any of them. I would end up with files everywhere. XP came along and I used whatever was in XP to open zip files. Does 7 work in the same manner? If not, I need some suggestions on a good free zip software that is easy to use. Like Winzip Thanks,
John

I believe so.
I think winzip is still around, but I'd prefer winrar. It isn't free, but you can use it without restriction beyond the trial end date. You just get an annoying message after a reminding you it isn't free, but you can ignore it like I do.

Is it fairly easy to use? I just unzip the occasional software utility.

Windows 7 opens Zip Files like any other folder, you won't even realise its a zip mostly, it will just have a small "Extract all Files" button at the top. So yeah, its pretty easy to use

That's all I needed to hear. Thanks

Try 7zip, its open-source and FREE. It will open all the file types that winrar or winzip can open.

I've used PowerArchiver for years, I believe they have a free version although I have the paid version but it's a one of payment for life which includes all the upgrades.
I used it through 98, ME, XP, Vista and now Windows 7.
It is very easy and if the zip you want to open is a program or application it will tell you and ask if you want to install it.

I addition to the built in zip handling I always recommend the open source & free, 7zip as an essential - in addition to zip handling, for more complex archives, it will open others formats such as RAR and ISO.
I leave windows as the default handler for zips but use the options in 7zip to set it to open the other archive types.
