The option is there but if you haven't spend any time in the bios on any system it can hard to ID right away. It would best to have it disabled in the Device Manager right off while finding the bios option is best sought by looking in the board's user manual in that section where things are gone over.

The model card you have now sees one page at C-Media Electronics, Inc.

Notice the "Block Diagram" on hte page there. Those two arrows illustrate the input and output to external not internal sources. The output from a video card as well would go to a tv or other item like patching a camcorder into the card for pc viewing.

Prices depend on where you can shop as well as look! Most will check things out at a vendor like newegg while others will search for things at EBay or one of the shopping sites. Newegg has been having some breaks on video cards and now will likely have a back to school special going for one you might be interested in.

First you will have to figure the price range and particular specs you want to see. There's everything from low through mid range to high end and ultra high end models to consider. Arre you considering an ATI driven model or simply planning to get another NVidia card?

I searched already in the user manual and didn't find it.
Why is it so important to disable the old sound chip?

I dont know "newegg".. I would like to buy it online for a low price, do you know where can I find a good and cheap S/PDIF cord?

I just want an S/PDIF cord.
I dont think I will buy a new graphic card.. I dont play PC gamed anymore, just COD4 sometimes.

And are you sure this cord will produce sound from my DVI slot?
    Thank you.

For the time being you can go into the device manager and look under the Sound, video, and game controllers sub there and right to click to disable the onboard sound once you know which item is for that alone. The sound card's software may have more then one item listed.

For newegg the main page for video cards is seen at Newegg.com - Video Cards, NVIDIA Video Card, ATI Video Cards, AGP Video Cards, GeForce Video Card, Radeon Video Card

I see you found it ok! Simply disabling the correct item in the DM is all you need. That will keep Windows from listing any updates for it in the optional hardwares.

If you decided later at some point to upgrade the card or it quits on you that will be a link to one of the more popular vendors there. They carry numerous other things like home entertainment and housewares in addition to pc components. Prices are generally good there.

As far as patching the video card into the sound card that would be like plugging the left output into the right channel's output. It doesn't work. When looking at the block diagram for the sound card on the product information page that shows the S/PDIF input and output going in and out from an external device not looping around to another expansion card. The diagram however only shows how things are plugged in as a general reference.

    So I can't connect an S/PFDIF cord?
    What is missing for that?
Is it because the sound card?

If I will clean my computer from dust, it wont be a problem if I unplug the sound card, right?

The prices in newegg are great, but I dont like buying somthing that fragile and complex as computer parts, in the internet. It's just too far me, but thanks :)

    Edit:
    DAMN..
I just plugged the speakers to the wrong place (to the blue input), so I switched to the green one, and my PC crashed.. I tried to turn it on back and couldn't..
Took the power cord out, plugged in, and the PC works and every thing is fine, even the sound.
    But why did it happen?

You wouldn't patch the audio out on a video card into the sound card. That would go to an external receiver/amplifier which sends out to Hi Fi type speakers for a home entertainment center.

As for cleaning things up that would often include pci as well as PCIe slots in order to rid them of dust and dirt especially if you start experiencing problems for some unknown reason and then look to find a layer of dust covering things. (saw a blanket of dust peeled off of one board from owner neglect!)

The first thing to learn however is taking precautions whenever handling any sensitive hardwares to some extent! The outer plate on a video, sound, or other expansion card is usually what you would grab them by. You have to anyways in order to insert or resert a card inplace. Resting one arm at least on the case itself will help discharge yourself from any static build up from let's say walking across a carpeted floor.

Some go much further to wear thin rubber gloves and wrist straps while generally those are not a requirement for a home user but a mandate at a pc repair shop.(as well as standing on rubber mats!) As far as ordering online you will find most people here at SF do that all the time. That can save on a lot hard earned cash! since retail outlets will have higher overheads and reflect that in their prices.

As far as having plugged the speakers into the blue jack and then into the green while powered up? Not Good! You'll end up damaging the card while powered up!

As far as the speakers being plugged into the blue jack that's a line-in jack there. Look back at Post #37 when I explained what each jack was for there. Something however caused the crash. You apparently still have some Windows related problems to work through.

You seem to be trying to go about things a bit too fast and this is where you are running into problems. Before rushing to plug things in get a bit more familiar with what each thing is for. This is why manuals in paperback or pdf file downloads as well as FAQs pages are seen at support sites. Learn how to doublecheck yourself along the way too!

This is not intended to be rude but to point out by simply taking things one step at a time you will save yourself numerous headaches. A little legwork to read up on things can be an asset rather then a downfall. Even those who have been in the (technology) field for years often end up saying: "aw crap got to go back to the books again!" for something.

I am not being fast with things.. not at all.. I always search for information online and read manuals and all that.. I never do something without being sure (exapt for plugging the RCA cord from my pc to the tv).
It took my I guess 30 minutes to connect the sound card to the PCI (not cause it's hard.. I really dont know why.. but thats how it took me.
And I plugged the speakers to the blue jack by accident, I was sure that was the green jack.
But why did my pc crash? what have I done wrong?
Do you want to say that I can't even unplug the speakers and plug headphones instead when the pc is on?

You wouldn't patch the audio out on a video card into the sound card. That would go to an external receiver/amplifier which sends out to Hi Fi type speakers for a home entertainment center.
So I can never patch an S\PDIF cord, so that the DVI plug will produce sound? (just answer "yes" or "no", please :))

So I wont have problems pulling out the sound card when I clean my pc from dust? (again, answer please "yes" or "no", I dont want to be rude, I am just having trubble finding the answer :S)

I know, I just dont like ordering stuff like that online.. I rather buy it from my country.. and if the store I buy from is near my house, it's even better.

I have so much problems with pcs.. something is always wrong.. nothing can't be right.

Thank you for your help :)

The one rule for hardware safety is shutting down first to avoid any accidents seen with live power being applied when going to plug or unplug anything besides a usb device like a printer or flash drive, external hard drive where you want Windows to detect the drive or device.

For sound cards I'll even take a flash light if needed to verify each plug goes to the correct jack even while a misplug usually won't harm anything. With anything that could be or couldn't be damaged by accident you still want to double check yourself anyways no matter how long you've been doing it. It's a force of a good habit to get into.

S/PDIF is optical audio I/O input/output while DVI is Digital Video Input. Those are two entirely different things to start with. Why would you attempt to patch a video input likely for camcorder or DVR(Digital Video Recorder) input into an audio in? The obvious answer would be NO!

As for removing expansion cards when going to clean NO as long as you take the basic ESD(Electro Static Discharge) precaution while handling. Save the esd bags the cards come in to lay them on when going to clean just to avoid any possibility of zapping any card.

I can understand why you may not want to shop online. There's no problem if you don't have domestic online vendors you can buy through or simply want to buy things in person. Not a problem here.

Even while not going to newegg for example to buy you can look over information as well as find the link for the manufacturer's product page for any hardware you look at there. Besides typically seeing good prices that site is popular for looking things up as well. If you want to compare simply browse!

We all end up having some problem or other at times with pcs! Don't feel you are isolated there! In fact sites like SF wouldn't be in existance unless people often needed hhhhhhhhhhelp please! with something?!

    Hahaha :)

I never thought I can harm a sound card by pluging the speakers to the wrong place..
When I used the onboard sound card, I did it sometimes (kinda rare) and nothing happen, I even plugged the speakers and headphones together (speakers-green jack, headphones-orange jack), or changed places between them and nothing happen..
So now I have to shut down my pc, change fron speakers to headphones and turn it on?
If I will do that, I will more likely damage my whole system then just the sound card.

As for the S/PDIF.. I didnt know, it's something that someone on a forum (not SF) said.. so I thought it's possible. So why is there an S/PDIF slot onboard?

Some questions about a graphic card:
    I have a "BFG Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 512MB OC2".
How much will cost me, something a bit (not too much) better than mine and with an HDMI output?
    What will you suggest?
What is better nowadays, ATI or Nvidia?
I always had Nvidia's graphic card and I still think they are better for some reason.
But every buddy say ATI is better for being cheap and useful.

    Thank you.
