The answer is probably very simple but here goes: I plugged my speakers (1/8" stereo jack) into the headphone outlet. Can hardly hear the sound. How do I get decent volume out of this system?

Maximize volume.
WIN is the key with the wavy flag on it.
Many headphone speakers have a volume control lever on them. Should be located where the left and right speaker wires join back together.
