Help with headset, Can hear sound but not record

I have my headset plugged into the front green port which has a picture of headphones. Im not sure if the mic should be unmuted or a line in. Right now I can hear sound but I can not record. Does anyone know what could be causing this or what settings I should check?
I have sound blaster software which really only has 2 options to work with headsets and both are checked in the console. Automatically enable headphone settings and automatically mute speakers.

    Hi nyliferocks,
Speakers should go into the green port yes. The Mic usually plugs into the red/pink port.

    Hi nyliferocks,
Does your headset come with a mic too? If so does it have 2 jacks on it. Maybe 1 green and 1 red? Or is it USB?

The headset came with a 2.5mm jack and I purchased an adapter to make it a 3.5mm so it can plug into the computer. The headset has an attached mic and 1 ear piece. What would be the best jack to place it in? The front headphone jack is the closest so I was hoping I could use this to gain some flexability with the length of the cord.

This seems to be a common issue and is clearly a bug within Windows 7. I have a Creative X-Fi card which worked perfectly under XP.

It works perfectly under 7 too, except it will not pick up the microphone, saying it is not plugged in.

7 is a brilliant OS but given the volume of issues posted on various sites about recording devices not working, it's certainly something MS needs to look at.

    Any advice would be great:

    Intel M/B,
    X-Fi soundcard
    ATI Radeon 4800
    4GB RAM
    Dual core Pentium...

it's a very clean system with no mods.

Like I said, any ideas, let me know

    cheers

I did have this problem with XP and I ended upgrading to 7 before I found a way to make this work. So I believe its just my settings.

I never fixed it. I meant to say, I upgraded to Windows 7 before I could find a way for it to work. So its still not working. Sorry for the typo. If anyone can help me and poster Richard B with our settings please let us know. :)
