Unless you threw it out or misplaced it that monitor should have come with an audio cable, you have to use it connected to the monitor and the headphone/speaker jack on the laptop to get sound on the monitor.

No the audio cable is required whether you connect it via DVI or VGA as neither of those can send audio. The only way to get audio to that monitor without it is to use HDMI, and then the HDMI port from the video card has to be able to send audio.

When that cable is connected it should have auto switched to the headphone/speaker jack from the laptops internal speakers, but it doesn't always work as planned. Double check the audio settings and make that it is switched to headphones/speakers and not still on the laptop's own speakers.

I still have a slight problem: the sound coming from the monitor is very low, even though everything is at max, but on my laptop, the sound is very loud. Would this be a sound card/speaker difference?

Well, if the notebook speakers plays it loud, but your monitor will not amplify it more, then you are probably out of luck.
