    5.1 audio not working

I have a Maximus 3 gene mobo, and im using the stock sound card [Creative SupremeFX X-Fi]. I have it all set up, test the speakers and i get sound from each one. But when i play music or have any sound playing ill only get sound from 1 audio jack. Ive tested the speakers on my other pc and they work perfectly. I have the newest updates/bios ect, so i have no clue if its a windows 7 [ultimate x64] and driver problem, broken driver, broken mobo or what. Ive tried everything i could think of, and ive emailed Asus numerous times and still no reply what so ever. Any help would be amazing

    Thx, Dw

For starters, install the latest bios - Maximus III Gene 2001 BIOS (2010/07/30 update)

    DwNecrid, welcome to the forums.

Are you using just the Via driver, or have you got the X-Fi software pack installed as well? Both are available from here,

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Motherboards - ASUS Maximus III GENE

As for things only playing in stereo instead of 5.1, are the sources encoded in 5.1 (movies, games, etc) or only stereo (music, online streaming, etc)? If they are only stereo sources then if using it, in the X-Fi settings you need to enable CMSS3D to upmix it to 5.1/surround; if only using the Via driver (does it even install the Via control panel?) you need to look for some kind of speaker fill option (sorry not sure what it's called in the Via software).

Turns out i already had the newest bios [think i did it all when my mem didnt work]

And yup, using it all. Installed it all when i first built this pc, then just updated it. Not sure if my music is 5.1 but i know all my games are 5.1 [sc2 for example] which i still dont get the 5.1. And no... via doesnt install the control panel sadly.

Just did as you said, no luck. Still stereo

Do you have headphone jacks out the front as well? If so, does that work?

You may want to try installing Ubuntu Live
    Download | Ubuntu

and listen to music, just to make sure it's not a hardware problem.

Thanks for all your guys help [no sarcasm]. First forum that actually at least attempted it ♥
Ive made the decission to slowly convert my gaming rig into a gaming/multimedia rig, getting a ballin' sound card in the next bit with a new speaker setup. The company i bought my mobo from said bring it in to get them to test it, so if they might be able to fix it.

    Once again, thanks guys :')
