I need an EQ for internet browsing (thus, a sound card???)

Hi, I just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 on it, and I'm disappointed that I can't find a system EQ anywhere. I listen to streaming music online, and I cannot find a system EQ to adjust the sound (I use winamp for playing files I own, and I know how to adjust that EQ). I do not have a separate sound card, just what was built into the board, which, if you tell me where to find the info and exactly what you need to know, I am happy to post here.

When the tech guy who built it was here, he has found a audio adjustment feature that set "environments" and had an EQ (with presets for "rock" "jazz" "theater" etc) built in, but I can't find that anywhere, I have been digging around trying to find it for over a week now. It's like, poof, gone. If you could guide me to that place, that may be helpful.

What I really need are SUGGESTIONS for products that can be installed in my system that would give me a system-wide EQ, and VERY HIGH QUALITY sound. This system is primarily used for listening to music. I need GOOD sound. I assume I need to add a specialty sound card? Something expensive and complicated? Tell me what to buy. Thanks!

While we're at it, if you have suggestions on really good sounding speaker systems, I'd love to know what you use/prefer. I'm looking for a nice surround sound system with good, powerful, but CLEAN bass. Price is mildly important, so if you know of any good deals, that'd be great to know. This is for a very small room, so it need not be extremely powerful, just clean and driving (The cops already show up for noise complaints constantly).

Thanks guys! I'm not very knowledgeable in computer building, but if you tell me what to buy, I'm confident I can find an online tutorial and get it set up on my own, since I'm fairly mechanically inclined! Isn't adding a sound card pretty much just popping it into a slot on the board and installing a cd?

Right click on the Microsoft speaker icon in the task bar, select playback devices.
The default audio out will have a green check mark, usually "Speakers".

Single left click on "speakers", select the properties button, select the "Enhancements" tab.

Scroll down the enhancements and see if you see a system EQ, if not you may have to intall the latest Realtek drivers.

    Ap

p.s. while you're thre you might take a look at all of tabs as a lot of the control functions are there.

I went in there, as you said (I'd been there before several times) and no, there is no EQ.

Where would I find the latest realtek drivers I need? Can I get them online? Would they be on one of my disks?

Thanks for your help, this is really driving me crazy.

Thank you, trying that now. On a side note, I believe I will buy a nice sound card for this machine eventually. Have you (or anyone here, for that matter) any experience with this particular model, or advice on something as nice (or nicer) that will work for my system?

No experience with Xonar cards myself, but I have heard many good things about them. Although im unsure about that model in particular.

I use the Xtreme Gamer Creative cards. never had a issue with mine and the official software, but not everyone has been that lucky with them.
Quite troublesome it seems for a few.

That card has really good reviews, and I own Asus monitors and really like the quality of them, that's why I'd decided to go with that brand. Yeah, in reading other sound card reviews, I did note that other brands were having some issues with Windows 7.

That driver did not supply me with any additional sound controls, unfortunately. I can just live with it until I get the soundcard, I suppose. If that doesn't fix it (still no EQ), I will just dump Windows 7 and go back to XP, I guess. I can't have a system without an EQ, it's entirely pointless for my purpose. HUGE oversight on Windows 7, IMO.

...on an entirely non-related note, there was some sort of browser hijack on this page just a few moments ago. It redirected me to a fake version of this page from my bookmarked copy of this thread. I had to delete my bookmark, and re-find the forum/thread from the main forum directory. The webmaster should probably look into that, I believe it was doubleclick related, which confuses me, as I see NO ads on this site anywhere. It has put me in the mind of questioning the validity of this website. Certainly worth someone looking in to.

Honestly, how nice does your sound card need to be when you're only listening to online streamers? The compression alone is enough to make it sound 2nd rate, anyhow.

I have a 12,000+ file library of music, actually. However, I do *ALSO* stream from online. As I stated in my original posting, I *know* how to EQ winamp for my library files, I just would LIKE to be able to EQ my streams as well. I do not always want to download EVERYTHING I listen to. An EQ would be very helpful. I actually think that most online streams sound fairly decent, when EQ'd. THUS, I need EQ. I do NOT *ONLY* listen to online streams.
