Windows 7: Making Application Sounds Play At Same Time

Making Application Sounds Play At Same Time

Hi there,

I want to make use of two application sounds running at once, for example, Flight Simulator 2004 and Ultimate Traffic, and every time I minimize Ultimate Traffic to go back into Flight Simulator, the Ultimate Traffic sound seems to mute (or give priority to Flight Simulator and stop Ultimate Traffic sound, hopefully you know what I'm trying to say).

I've been looking around the Control Panel and tweaked a few things, but to no avail. It seems like it should have such a simple solution, yet it seems persistant in not working.

This is the only issue I've had with Windows 7, apart from that I love it.

I'm sure you have a lot more experience than me so this is just some random thoughts that might jog an idea or two. Seems like what you're trying to do is similar to having background music playing while someone is doing a talkover. That usually means recording each "sound" to a separate track, then sync-ing the two sounds so they overlap, and finally recording both tracks into one final version.

A free tool called Audacity gives you that control. And this tutorial goes into a bit more detail. Sorry if this isn't what you had in mind.

This isn't what I had in mind. What happens when I minimize an application is that no sound comes from that application but gives priority sound to the active application. There should be a setting somewhere that allows you make sound from 2 applications play at the same time. Think I've explained it a bit better than my first post. Thanks anyway.

Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit Retail

I believe this is a driver issue. I use ASIO4ALL. That drive does not allow sharing sound. If I use the MME/DirectX driver, which is of MS origin, I can share sound but at a price. To get decent sound I loose latency. If I want better latency the audio suffers dramatically.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to buy a quality sound card so I can avoid this problem. It is my understanding that SoundBlaster cards do not solve the problem. However, I am reporting heresay so take what you read here with a box of salt.

Note that I use Ableton Live DAW and try to watch video tutorials. At the moment, this is not possible and I've yet to find a solution.
