i would try this drivers, they are for 1988B but they might work on 1888 as well. I know couple for months ago when i was trying how my mobo sound card (im currently using x-fi) works in Win7, i was using beta drivers for 2000B for Win7 and find out they are usualy backwards compatible.

Well, after some work and lucky I got the sound working. I got the driver from here but this driver didnīt worked in the first time I installed it. In the second attempt it did work. What changed from the first to the second is because I installed the RealTek ACī97 drivers before and I launched the setup.exe in the compatibility mode with Windows XP. Anyway, this driver may break the boot-up, so I have boot in safety mode and remove it. That is annoying, but the sound working after almost 20 days of silence is good enought to me.

Here is what worked for me, and it's quite similar to the solutions listed above (it may even be identical to one I didn't notice).

    1. Uninstall any sound drivers you might current have.
    2. Download this driver and unpack (don't need to run setup and it won't help) -> IntelŪ Desktop Board D201GLY Audio: ADI* AD1888 AC97 Driver
    3. Scan for new hardware but immediately stop the update from Windows Update and instead direct windows to use the drivers you unpacked in step 2.
Alternatively you might be able to use the RealTek AC97 driver that windows autodetects and installs, but you may have to plug your speakers into the mic jack. If this is not enough detail for you, post back and I'll give you click by click instructions.

I bought the Asus A8S-X SE mobo from 3btech.net about 2 years ago and they included the XP 64-bit drivers. The driver is called
    SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
    Driver Date: 2/3/2005
    Driver Version: 5.12.2.5280

    and it's working for me.

    Hi.
My problem was that windows update automatically installed Realtek sound driver and i could not hear any sound while it says all is working correctly. My device is AD1888 @ Intel 82801FB ICH6 - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-2], OS Win7 x86.
    Resolved the problem this way:
Downloaded SoundAMX driver from motherboard manufacturer's site Foxconn - Products: Motherboard (unfortunately there were no drivers for win7/Vista so i downloaded the only one provided for WinXP x86). Then installed the driver using WinXP compatibility mode as described in SoundMax AD1888 driver.

    Hope this helps

This method worked with a new install of Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Goto the Intel site and download the driver and save it to your desktop (note - it doesn't list 64 bit but when you run it it'll have a folder that includes Vista 64).

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...13365&lang=eng

Run the file which will uncompress it to another file within the folder.

Now, goto Device Manager (click Start, right click Computer, and click on Manage, click Device Manager), double click on the Audio device and click Update Driver and browse to the folder on the desktop that you you uncompressed to and select either the Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit folder. Click OK to allow it to install and you should have sound without having to reboot (at least it works for the 32 bit, haven't tried the 64 bit driver).

Note - I did not run the setup even though there is one listed.

After seeing the hint in this thread, I tried every (32-bit) driver for SoundMax with my Asus computer (Asus P4P800-SX m/b, on which I can run Soundmax 5.12.01.3665 with Windows XP SP3 32-bit boot).

Under Win7 32-bit, I found the trick was to do this:

    1. Remove all previous sound drivers (I had tried Realtech, other AC97, several SoundMax versions). Reboot.
    2. Go to Windows Update, and disable automatic download and install (otherwise, your work may be undone by an automatic Windows Update of the carefully-installed driver).
    3. Go to Asus website, search for the motherboard and download the SoundMax drivers for Windows XP - for me, the one originally used was version 5.12.01.3665 - don't use anything more recent.
    4. Unpack the ZIP file, find the setup.exe, right-click and go to Properties and mark it as Window XP compatible. Then run the executable, reboot, etc.
Prior to doing all this, I had simply copied the smwdm.sys file (565Kb) into c:\windows\system32\drivers\ (overwriting whatever was there) and rebooted - but it didn't work for me.

Sound seems OK, so far - though on first run of SoundMax (UI) I did get a message about a missing codec. I haven't resolved that, but haven't seen that message for a while.
This works for Asus P4C800-E too! Big thanks to "gxdata". I copied the smwdm.sys file anyway, just in case
