Hi, I have several FLAC files in my Media Library, and so far I have no problems playing them. The only thing that bugs me is that I can't seek! If I try to seek, it starts the song from the beginning.
Here's a shot:

Also when I look up the FLAC files in the Artist section (only my Daft Punk music is in FLAC) it says "0 seconds"...

I suppose if I mess around with the drivers (Shark007 codec) I can get it, but I''m not sure where to touch. My system specs are all included in my profile if you need them. Could you please help?

I converted the files to MP3... sorry... That's what I thought of in the 1st place and since no one replied I just went with this classic solution.

Hi all
just to add 2 points here

1) Winamp plays FLAC without any probs whatsoever as do quite a lot of other of these types of apps - and often have better ways of organising multi-media libraries too.

2) FLAC is a nice LOSSLESS compressed system. This means you keep 100% of the original audio with no loss of quality.

If you compress it to mp3 which is a "Lossy" format - even at 256 kb you will get degradation in sound quality and a lot of hideous "artifacts".

This might not matter too much if you are listening on an Ipod in a train / on a bus etc with those hideous white "bud" type of earphones but play this stuff through a decent high quality Audio amp (not your average computer sound system) or listen to the flac output directly with a pair of expensive Bose headphones and you'll see at once what I mean. The MP3 sound will (particularly at 64 kb compression which is what a lot of people use) be excruciantingly HIDEOUS whether you are listening to heavy metal or a classical string quartet. Even 128 kb compression is not really tolerable for high end serious listening. (OK on an IPOD however).

Cheers
jimbo

Thanks! Glad you like it, its all Adobe Photoshop CS4. About the FLAC... an OK format, but when it comes to exporting the music to a portable music player it starts to suck... Very few MP3 Players and SmartPhones support FLAC and very few converters convert FLAC 2 MP3 the way YOU want to. The solution for portable devices is MP3 at highest bitrate, even though it's not that good... OK, now I'll catch ya later guys, going out!

Winamp certainly has its virtues but the point is that we'd like to use WMP. Personally, I prefer the new WMP library to anything of Winamp's. I use WMP for playing everything from personal Bluray backups to mp3s, so why not get it working for FLAC too?

The new version of WMP in combination with a single codec pack installation allows me to do all this and sync my iPod to my music library and it comes pre-installed in Windows 7. It does everything I want it to do, it's not noticeably heavier on resources even though I know for a fact that it is and it's got an attractive look to it that gives my HTPC a bit of class where I can't say the same for the cheesy Winamp skins.

Still, I just found a solution: XIPH
Try it out, after install it should work perfectly.

LOL @ works perfectly...
Nice solution except for the fact that it breaks several aspects on WMP.
For starters, WMP's open dialog is now hosed. It used to look like this:

filetypesv.jpg

but now the media dropdown list is missing.

In my opinion, putting up with a small annoyance, cannot seek, which only occurs when directly played, and can easily be avoided by choosing to use a rightclick of the FLAC file, and clicking on 'Add to Windows Media Player List', is better than hosing your system.

BTW, Add to Windows Media Player List, suggested in my previous response is only possible for FLAC files when using my codec releases and also choosing to use the Filetypes Association button on the Help TAB.

WMPTagPlus has been updated to support FLAC as well as others.
WMP Tag Plus - MPEG4, Vorbis and FLAC metadata support for WMP - Hydrogenaudio Forums

on a clean install of Win7x64 with WMP12, i have zero issues with both the x86 and x64 XIPH direct show filters.

once WMPTagPlus is added, then flac seek works for a regular libray. you no longer need to add the files through explorer.

i have never had WMP crash on me with this config, and i do not use the shark codec pack for flac support in WMP.

I can confirm this does in fact solve the seeking problem. I use the Xiph plugins as well. Shark007 is probably trying to promote his codec... the latest version of Xiph doesn't damage WMP. I recommend installing WMPTagPlus alongside Xiph to guarantee perfect FLAC playback.

Firstly Shark007 doesn't need to promote his codec hundreds of sevenforum members do that for him regularly and as a recent convert to sharks pack i consider myself a supporter.
I used to use klite mega pack but it was tricky to configure for noobs , sharks pack with x64 support addon pack couldn't have been more simple to use it plays everything i have thrown at it and i also use wmp tag plus as it shows my flac albums in wmp.
shark007 spelt out the reason why his pack performed better , seven forums is about helping one another and when you are passionate about something and see a better way then your going to say so, its the ethos of sevenforums ,i appreciate you are entitled to your own opinion, this is mine.
