I use mediamonkey, and I would say make a separate folder of all the mp3's you want to use in the car, add that folder to the Mediamonkey library, and normalize just that folder....thereby leaving your originals untouched. That way, it doesn't matter that the leveling is permanent....your originals will still be safe!

I did basically the same thing with my old MP3 player that I used at work, plugged into a stereo.....made copies that were normalized just for that, then I deleted them from my hard driveafter loading them on the player.

I am testing mediamonkey, but see no option for normalizing

Figured out normalizing is "Leveling Volume"
I just found out that some of my recordings are in m4a format
Will they be converted to mp3 when burned to the dvd ?
(I am burning as data to fit more on the disc)

Have you checked to make sure the car will play a data disc?

Yup, it's a 2008 Dodge grand caravan, and it plays almost anything I throw at it
Has a jukebox function where I've stored tunes before, but the levels are such that I have to babysit the volume knob

    Until MediaMonkey

The m4a songs will not automatically be converted to mp3 when you burn, either. So if you did burn them, I'd guess the car wouldn't play them. Converting them to mp3 will result in a quality loss, too....but maybe in a car that quality loss might not be noticeable. If you chose to try that, then I would say again to preserve the originals, because the conversions won't sound as good.....just delete the conversions after you burn the disc.

    Ok.
Just selected options before burning, auto converted all to mp3
    Worked excellent
I reviewed the original directory and the "Ready to burn" directory, and definitely could see a difference in the quality of what mediamonkey did...

Listened to the first few seconds of each song, and found what you said is true
There is (at least to my ears) a noticeable difference in quality
    Still, much better than before.

Only problem I notice so far is that the songs were not burned to the dvd in the order in which I had hoped.
Once they were all selected, I clicked and dragged a few into different positions than they were on the hard drive.
Once burned, they still played in the order in which they were on the hard drive.

    I need to clarify

    Ripped cd's to directory A
Copied directory A to directory B
Used mediamonkey to level volume of songs in B

They were in order A to Z
Before burning I rearranged them out of alphabetical order
When burned to dvd, they were alphabetical

I think the only way to get around that would have been to use Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...) to load that folder of songs, and use it to number the list of tracks in the order you wanted....and only then burn the disc. My suggestion is just listen to the disc in shuffle mode, to bypass the alphabetical order.
