windows 7 rc no hd 5.1 sound with asus p5b

what gives peeps i ve just update from xp pro to win7rc. alls mostly went well appart from i cant get 5.1 surround on. i ve tried updating the soundmax drivers but it tells me that i ve got the most up to date drivers (i ve used the vista drivers). when i use sound max software to test the speakers it works fine and also i get 5.1 playing counterstrike. i have an asus p5b if that helps
please help i like windows 7 but this is going to get me back onto xp pro

I have Asus Commando with the same Soundmax device and the sound can be changed through Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\sound either that or install the newer driver software found here

mine works fine on optical but you also may need some codecs to play video files and other stuff to be found here

Theres no way I'm going back to XP now, Win 7 is great

thanks for the quick post !!! i ve tried lots of times to configure using both sound max and windows drivers. i can set them up 5.1 and all speaker test s show the speakers are working... i m starting to suspect that it s not driver related but glitch in the o/s!
i get proper sound when playing games which i find strange (gpu must take care of the audio as well) i followed the links you gave me for the new codec s no joy ther but to be truthful i m not that clued up with codecs..........
