Any way to improve the computer's internal mic?

I record through my software program. I don't like to use an external mic. The computer's built-in speakers play back recordings done from other equipment, i.e., a digital record I use, are loud enough but the recordings throught the computer's internal mic are too faint. I've tried a couple mics but then didn't really do much better. I've tried to adjust the internal mic's settings but the control box for the mic and speakers is confusing. Any way to improve the computer's internal mic?

Thanks

Hi karays,

I know you said that you don't like to use an external mic, but I think that this will be the best way to improve microphone recordings. Built-in mics are satisfactory for webcam use, but anything more substantial and you'll find them woefully inadequate. Besides their relatively poor frequency response, built-in mics tend to pick up unwanted system noises, like the HDD and fans.

That said, it is quite possible that with the correct settings you will find the built-in mic adequate for your needs, although the quality will never be as good as with an external one. In order to do that, we need some more information from you. You have said that your computer is a Dell, but what is the full model/series number?

So I tried a mic today and it didn't record anything, just fuzz. When I go to the control box for recording, playback, speakers/headphones, I selected mic/line in. Can you offer any suggestions on why a mic won't work? This is the second time I"ve tried an mic and it doesn't work or is barely audible.

Thank you again.
