Windows 7: no audio over HDMI

no audio over HDMI

This problem has been solved. I don't have the version of the nvidia driver that took care of it handy - if you need to know, please contact me and I'll get back to you.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks.

I installed RC 7100 on my new HTPC build a couple days ago. Everything went pretty smoothly, except for audio.

The machine is connected to an HDTV via HDMI, and I've got no audio at all. The stock MS drivers that were used out of the box didn't provide sound, and the latest Nvidia drivers didn't help either.

It's not a configuration issue with either the TV or the machine's BIOS, as I previously had linux installed on the same machine, and I had audio over HDMI.

Any thoughts or troubleshooting tips? Thanks!

feh, welcome to the forums.

Assuming that the option is there, did you set HDMI Out as the default audio device in the Windows playback properties?

No promises as you have to use the Vista driver, but do you have the latest Via audio driver installed (VIA VT1708B is the chipset)?

No, I have not installed them. I did install the Nvidia HDMI drivers.

Which begs a question...this is the first time I've bought/used a multimedia/htpc motherboard. There is onboard audio for 7.1 sound; is the same audio chipset used for both the "standard" audio output jacks as what gets pushed out the HDMI? Is it a completely different chipset?

Knowing what hardware is used for HDMI audio would instruct me on what drivers to search for.

First I wanted to say Hi and welcome to SF. I also wanted to say thank you for filling in your system specs. It makes troubleshooting a whole lot easier. I fyou did a clean install when you installed win 7 chances are its a driver issue. Dont know if you hae 64 or 32 bit but why dont you try a search here in SF for your model graphics card and see if there is a thread that deals with iy. It seems thre have been a number of hdmi audio and video problems. the other option is to try upgrading to a newer win 7 build. M$ may have addressed your specific driver issue in a later build

Hope this helps and I will keep an eye on this thread in case you need more help

Unless Nvidia has done something totally different to how HDMI audio works with the onboard video over an actual video card (requires the use of a SPDIF cable from the sound card to the video card, which I can see being built-in to the board for the anboard video), then the onboard audio needs to be enabled and the drivers installed to work properly.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll check out the VIA drivers tonight.

For what it's worth - the nvidia site did have downloads for HDMI audio for this board. Perhaps they were just repackaged VIA drivers?

Thanks for the welcome.

FWIW - I'm using the 64 bit version of the OS and drivers.

FYI - I installed the VIA driver, which made no difference at all; still no audio over HDMI.

I do have audio through the analog pin connector (line out), but that does me no good when connected to my HDTV.
