recording phone calls in my laptop

i am making phone calls through my laptop. i and my friend want to record some of our conversations. when i assigned the software to record from Microphone, i could record both my voice and my friend's but the problem is that since her sound came from the speakers, words got echoed and it is irritating her. (the mic is taking both mine and her voice) i tried to use a pair of earbuds but then i couldn't record her voice. (the mic is taking only my voice.)
i assigned the mixer as the source for the recording software; and can record her voice clear and without echoing problem but i no longer am able to record what i say in responce to her! (the software records the sounds inside windows but not my voice coming from mic.)
how can i record our voices both; without the echoing problem and with a reasonable qaulity?

Is that legal without the other party's consent?

Get her off the speaker phone. Phone recording is very touchy in general, but speaker phones are a major complication. If you are serious about it, look at Total Recorder.

Video recorders (screen capture programs) usually can record mic and system sound simultaneaosly. I use Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 that can do that. But that may be a bit expensive for the purpose ($199). But I am sure there are some free ones that can do that too. You can always easily convert the video file to an .mp3 file for the sound only. Use: Format Factory - Free media file format converter

Try this one ( CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software ). Since you do not care about the video quality, any screen capture program will do. Here are a lot more: Free Screen Capture Software Downloads - Freeware Files.com

PS: you must use earphones though. Else you will always have the problem of feedback from the speaker.

    resolved

@jebuchanan: i and my friend want to record some of our conversations
    no worries my friend.
thanks for the tips. i got it resolved:
right clicked on volume control in tray>recording devices>stereo mix as default
then in the same window: selected microphone>properties>listen tab>checked the "listen to this device".
@whs: you are right. i got a very unpleasant noise (feedback) which using the earbuds or head phones solved the issue

    thank you all
