    Realtek AC'97 Driver BSOD issues

Okay, this issue is for a friend's computer, for the life of me I can't figure it out trying to solve the problem. Their sound does not work on their computer, presumably the sound card is not installed. They reformatted the computer and for whatever issue, their sound was not installed when they used the restore disks that came with the computer. The system is able to detect that the sound card is there and treats it as new hardware, which normally would be fine, re-install and away you go, but that's where the problem comes in. I have found the newest drivers for the sound card, the system recognizes the sound card as a Realtek AC'97, but when you go to install it, the system craps out, gives you the Blue Screen of Death and wants you to restart it. I have tried getting the drivers from various places but they all meet the same end. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Windows 7 Fourms!

Is this a On-board Sound card? or an attached one? if an attached one it should be reseated (with the system powered off, and power cord removed from the system).

I'm not overly sure to be honest. I'm not familiar with the system and I haven't opened it up as I didn't want to go that far with it, it's within the tower itself :P I'll admit, I'm not overly computer savey but I pretend well.....

    Also,

When the system Blue screens, what is the error code that it says on the screen? The error codes can tell you alot sometimes about what is wrong.

    System Error Codes (Windows)

If it is a stop message that the blue screen is displaying. Perhaps a check Disk (chkdsk) needs to be run, and may fix, or further unvail issues with the system.

Sorry for all the questions, but........
In order to troubleshoot your problem we need to know more detailed specs of your system hardware.

    1. Go to Start > Run, and type msinfo32, look under the Components section for hardware identification
    2. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager and look for any entry that has a yellow flag beside it
    3. The manufacturer name and model number of your PC, if applicable
    4. Download SIV (System Information Viewer) 4.00 for very detailed information about your system.
    5. Or PC Wizard 2009.1.88

The exact make and model of your motherboard and sound card would be of great help also.
Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Was it a "clean" install or an upgrade?
    Are you dual-booting?
Are you using the official RC directly from Microsoft?
Did this occur immediately after install?
Do you recall installing any software that may have caused the problem?
There are many versions of the Realtek AC'97 drivers and codecs.

    6. Please fill out your computers specs in the User Control Panel here on the site as well. It will then appear next to your name. look at my posting and you'll see the drop-down arrow.

As for the other information, I have no idea as this isn't my computer and I have limited to no experience with this system, or hardware in general or even where you would find that info.

Does the Microsoft Lifecam have a microphone, or sound device on it? Easy way to tell... Disconnect it from the computer and restart. This may be an easy fix for the issue. Also, Windows 7 May not be compatiable with the Soundcard. I would look for the Windows Vista Sound card Drivers and see if they work on the system.

**Also, some compat issues with Windows XP sp3 have been solved using Vista drivers. That is a good place to start.

It has a microphone on it, I just installed the webcam about 15 minutes ago. This problem has been persistant since they redid the comp a couple weeks ago. My buddy just never installed her webcam.
