Problems with sound recording

Hey everyone! I have a problem, which i have been struggling with for a long time.
Its simple. When i speak into a microphone, the sound quality is bad. Very bad.
When im on skype with my friends, they most of the time cant hear what im saying, because of stuttering and noisy sounds. When im trying to record sound via the sound recorder, the same thing happens. I have tried with many different headsets too, which works fine on other PC's.

I have a a Packard Bell EasyNote TJ66-843NC. I have heard that Packard Bell is very bad quality, which i believe in now, but if you know anything about how to solve this problem, please help me.

Btw, my microphone recording unit is Conexent High Definition Audio

I'm not sure that there's much you can do short of buying a new mic... If you were to buy one, what's your price range? I could try to find you a good, cheap one.

Well, i can try a new mic if so, but i dont think thats the problem.
I have a somewhat good mic, it worked great on my other PC, but it doesent work on this one. I was using my old PC for a period since this one was at a friend.

I just bought this new computer one week ago, and I had this very similar problem.

This is how I fixed it .....
Plug in the mic > Start > Control Panel > Ease of Access > at Speach Recognition, select Set Up a microphone > select Desktop Microphone > Next > follow instructions there.

Hope it works for you.

I just did what you told me to do, but when i tried to chose Set up a microphone, it comes up with this error:

"Your current default speech engine does not support this action at this time"

How is that fixed?

Could you tell me what headset/mic you have? The majority of mic problems have to do with the actual quality of the headset, not the computer.
