Are your drivers up to date.
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool shows the driver dates as...
    Realtek 03-09-2010
    Nvidia 03-08-2011

    Realtek

Im pretty sure its the graphic cards audio drivers, related to HDMI use that somehow have impaired the mobo sound drivers. My question now is really how to make the mobo drivers override the graphic card ones?

Ive tried removing the NVIDIA sound drivers and the related Audio services which use the same bus as the graphic card - thought that would "block" them. I just played Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on my tv-monitor and the sound worked perfectly, but the ability to simply play the sound trough speakers still are not available to me. Ive droned around the web, and it seems a rather common problem, at least not very rare.

surely there must be some way to fix this?

    Thanks again for your time!

I would disconnect the front panel connection to the motherboard. It may be defective.
After disconnecting it, unplug your back panel speaker connection. Plug it back in and see if you
get the Realtek jack detection pop-up. If you do, see if the Speaker says "working".

Its 4:35 AM here in Norway now, have flipped my day-rhytm 2 days in a row now to fix this, Im just going to to reinstall the video-card and realtek drivers and drop of the faulty piece of annoyanc (aka computer) off at a repair shop as you are probably right, it seems to be a fine combination of the: as some guy said at another forum: "I think the graphics card has somehow confused the PC into thinking it had another sound card installed."

And some form of mechanical issue.

In a last ditch attempt I uninstalled anything NVIDIA, together with all audio drivers and teared the video card out of the machine to no use - the sound didnt return.

Someone came up with the idea that the graphic card were to power draining so that power to sound were cut but:
Though, as I mentioned earlier there was still static noise in the jack when volume slider and volume knob on speakers were turned all the way up - and i have a good 500W PSU, so I have plenty of power supply.

Thanks for your time. Best regards, Lars

Hi Lars (I guess this is your first name...)
Believe it or not, I have suddenly the same problem after my power supply had to be replaced. And I also have a Shuttle with a graphic card.
If by any chance you come across this thread (long time passed since you posted yours) -please let me know if the issue was fixed.
