No sound with P5P 800, drivers installed

Hi everyone, I'm running Windows 7 build 7000, and I have an ASUS P5P 800 motherboard that has an onboard sound device. After connecting to the internet, Windows Update installed 'Sound MAX Integrated Digital Audio' drivers, and the sound icon appears in the bottom right of the task bar.

The problem is that audio doesn't work (and flash games and videos are very slow, could that be a side effect of no audio?). Windows media player doesn't play sound files either, and clicking on the 'Web Help' button on the error message takes me to:
Microsoft Windows Media - Web Help
But my sound device is enabled and drivers are installed.

Also, if I right click on the sound icon in the task bar and go to 'Playback Devices' -> 'Properties' -> 'Advanced' and try to play a sound at any quality level, I get an error too.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Go to control panal -> Device Manager -> Sound, Monitors,...-> and see what you got. Right click and hit update drivers.

Chances are that wont work. I Have an asus and it didnt work for me so I went right to asus.com and downloaded thier drivers. I said I had x64 vista and nothing came up, changed to x32 and I downloaded the sound drivers from thier. The drivers installed fine on my Win7 and I restarted and Boom, sound worked.

I did the automatic update and that said that it's already updated to the latest drivers, I went on the ASUS website and downloaded the audio drivers, but the installation reported that my OS isn't supported, and even when I pointed device manager driver updates to the unzipped install directory, it still reported that the audio driver is up to date.

Have encountered the same problem (with a P5P800 motherboard). Have also tried the drivers from Asus and so far, no luck. If I come up with a solution, will post it here.

Hey everyone, I installed the ASUS drivers while in compatibility mode, and that succeded, but the computer couldn't restart, it froze at the startup screen, so for the 3rd time I had to reinstall windows. Now I'll probably go back to XP unless someone has a fix for my constant reinstallinations. Oh well, thanks anyways.

I received a response from Mr GRiM to use the Realtek audio drivers. I didn't think they would work (SoundMAX isn't Realtek), but tried them anyway. They didn't work. Went back out to the Asus site and downloaded the last version they had which were for XP SP2.

Ran the setup in XP SP2 compatibility mode, which prompted for a reboot to remove the current drivers. After the reboot, the audio device wasn't recognized, ran the setup for the XP drivers again, rebooted for the 3rd time, the drivers installed on reboot, but still no audio. Rebooted for the 4th time, and finally had audio on reboot. In case you want to check, the drivers that finally worked are:

    Driver ver. 5.12.1.3630 (6/02/2003)
    aeaudio.sys ver 3.0.2.32
    drmk.sys ver 6.1.7000.0
    portcls.sys ver 6.1.7000.0
    smsens.sys ver 5.12.01.000
    smwdm.sys ver 5.12.01.3630
The drivers are at ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

    Good luck.
