Logitech 5.1 surround question and soundcard question IDT and Realtek
So my situation is unique lol
i have a Dell inspiron n5010 laptop running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit the soundcard for this is either IDT 92HD79B1, v.6.10.0.6267, A01 or A03 i dont know what the default one mine came with is. Documentation i hope that helps ^ and the attatchment i posted is also an indepth analysis of my laptop. basically this soundcard has the input for one regular jack. like the jack on ipod headphones idk the technical name. aside form that i have logitech 5.1 surround sound speakers with the Green orange black jacks on the ends of those... ive used 2 splitters to make those 3 into 1 and i have it hooked up to my laptop and i hear sound from all 3 speakers... is there any way any software to make the laptop think i have 5.1 input? and also can i install realtek on my machine??? i have it installed but i cant use it... is realteka software or a sound card?? |

Just plug your 5.1 or 7.1 into the jack and it should be picked up by the software. Otherwise these little badboys work great as well !

StarTech.com ICUSBAUDIO7 Virtual 7.1 USB Stereo Audio Adapter External Sound Card - USB 2.0, USB 1.1, Phono 3.5mm Female, C-Media Chipset at TigerDirect Hmmm so i guess i'll need something like that because, the 5.1 logitech speakers i have look like this at the end http://www.techarp.com/review/Logite..._connector.jpg look at that picture but ignore everything except for the green orange and black jacks on the bottom my speakers input.. or.. output jacks look just like that. my laptop has a ONe hole jack for only basic headphones there is NO green ornage or black slot. for those male inputs what ive sued to make them work now is put 2 splitters on the ends of the green orange blak to make it a singular regular jack for my laptop |

You cannot get 5.1 sound out of a single stereo jack connected to analogue speakers. You might be able to get all the speakers to make sound using adapters, but it will not be in 5.1. And no, software can't do it either. The only way you're going to get 5.1 sound out of that laptop is to use the HDMI port and connect it to a receiver or something similar (and hope the latop allows for just passing audio over the HDMI connection), and use it that way.
The only other option would be to use an external sound card, something like this, Newegg.com - Creative 70SB109500000 5.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz USB Interface X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro to connect those speakers to. |

EDIT: what are the requirements to run realtek? do you need realtek hardware? |

Ok with a Logitech 5.1 then this is what you'll need. Some speakers just synthesize the surround channels anyway. But this or something like it will work just fine with the Logitech powered speaker systems.

I was also thinking a USB 5.1 Channel Audio Adapter would be worth looking at
eg Vantec USB External 5.1 Channel Audio Adapter - YouTube I understand they are quite cheap. |
