Perhaps it is a drive issue as I've just found that I can play and rip it on my old XP system although it might be a copy protection problem too. I haven't really followed all the DRM issues much over the years and thought that it had all been abandoned by now - I know, I'm just too, too honest - sign of my age. Perhaps it is just older CDs like this one although I think it is a new remaster. Anyway problem solved - so a big thanks to all who contributed. -->

Perhaps one advantage of keeping an old system alive and not just accepting the latest as best!

I think I really will have to do more research before posting though!

OK, reading a recent thread has made me think that the issue might have been a copy protection one as the Sound Card has a digital output and apparently because of this it might have blocked playing. Can't understand how it just didn't show in Explorer though or any other program. Just some info for anyone else having this problem.

I doubt that the sound card digital out has anything to do with this. Copy Protection yes, but nothing to do with the sound card.

I don't know of any copy protection that could make a disc COMPLETELY unreadable/appear as blank to a computer. I'd say that's pretty much impossible...

The bit I read was because of the exact copying available to the digital out. When the disk is put in some activity is going on but then ... nothing. Anyway it seems I have another of these CDs (not HDCD though), again from Warner - Closer by Joy Division and I'm not the only one it seems -

What a pain, but it will get the same treatment as the other one. Will look more closely at any future CDs I buy, especially from Warner!

Try firmware update of the cd drive?

Here they advice doing a firmware update of the CD drive:

CyberPower: warner brothers cd's and windows7

good luck for anyone having the same problem. it seems CDs from Warner have these issues.
