I do not see a spdif interface

I plugged in my HDMI cable to my laptop. I get only video, without sound. I discovered that i have to select the S/PDIF settings. BUT, i only see the "speaker" settings. I have selected and deselected the "show disabled devices", to no avail. What am i doing wrong? I am trying to get the sound to play through my HDMI cable. I have googled this problem and found solutions with all of them being that i have to select the S/PDIF...and i don't even have it listed as an option and no way of knowing how i can get it to show up.

I have an ASUS UL80V laptop with a windows 7 OS. My audio works fine other than the S/PDIF issue.

I must be doing something wrong, any help will be appreciated.

HDMI Port (the ASUS UL80V )
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an uncompressed all-digital audio/video interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, and A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). Supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements or requirements.
For models with both the integrated and discrete graphics cards, the HDMI output is available only when you select the discrete graphics card mode.

HDMI incorporates its own audio device to carry audio along with the video. It doesn't use your laptop's onboard audio.

If you go to Control Panel -> Sound, you should have two audio devices listed under the Playback tab. Rightclick the one that says HDMI and set it as the default device. You should then hear all sounds through the HDMI connection (and no longer from the laptop's speakers).

You install the video driver from Asus,

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS UL80Vt

which also includes the Nvidia HD Audio driver which is required for the HDMI audio to work?
