"@Cruxone - I apologize to you for the confusion this has likely caused, so I have already written the plan I worked out, and I'm not leaving, just trying to defuse any unintentional "foot stepping" or whatever you'd like to call it."

You are saying you have it written out, but haven't yet posted it?

I didn't realize it was your bday, Mike. I can't believe you went through all that trouble. I def could wait a day! At any rate, whenever you get back on, I am eager to get all the help it takes.

I tried running that "fix it" program. It didn't seem to do anything. Animal sacrifice looking like the best bet again. Who even knows if a successful update will fix the problem? At this point I guess I would be down with a factory restore just to save myself and you guys some hours.

    Of course not!
Just got up real late, and had work I had to goto.
I can't say I have much more to offer at this point. Have you done anything else?
One thing I read about the sfc tool both here in the tutorial and at MS, is that you "may have to run it up to 3 times before it can repair the files sometimes. I'm not sure how long it took, but it might be worth a second try to see if the log is identical.

If you would like, as you mentioned, we could just do a clean install (do you have the factory Restore CD (pretty uncommon) or did you make a set of system repair discs? maybe when you first got the computer? we don't really need them, as you should have a copy of it on your hard drive - Restore Partition. It's just not a confident feeling I get when your having possibly drive corruption (just guessing because there are corrupt system files or at least manifests for the files. I just worry that your drive becomes unusable, during the process, and then you have no backup medium such as DVDs/CDs to fix it with. If you had a copy of Win 7 Retail or Upgrade that was the same version as yours (64-bit, home premium) we could use that, to fix it, even if it was a loaner from a friend - don't worry, it's not illegal If done correctly.

We can pursue the problem in the general steps I mentioned above (posts #96 & #97) The first being the general outline I was referring to above when you asked if I had something written down, I was merely leaving you two with what I thought best, and was hoping someone would have helped you today, I guess AllOnTheBus Didn't return. I expected he would have, he must have not signed on today.

What do you want to do? Have you backed up your files? Would you like to try the system file checker again (sfc command) and see if it produces some results!

(I'm also wondering how much stuff you mutch have to backup, because you said your HDD was completely full, potentially causing this issue during SP1 downloading. (That would likely also be why you only had 2 restore points!) )

    Sincerely,
    Mike

    Yeh srry folks

Been at golf today - won the A grade comp.

Ummm - no hard feelings here either, guess temper starts to set in when not being able
    to get a solution.

Anyways- I also have a Qosmio and my knowledge is exhausted on this topic, especiallly in regard to
analysing cbs log files and error reports. I think i best be putting this next on my things to do list.
I did spend time doing a factory restore last night just to see how long it would take because
I'm sure that cruxone would definitely like a functioning machine. Have you at least contacted the
relatives on the old ringle dingle?

Well it took me, or the recovery partition I should say about an hour and a half to make me a brand
new puter again. I personally wouldn't worry too much about damaging the recovery
partition on a Toshiba, they lock it so hard that it's very hard to remove and I know this
cause there were still remnants floating about on my old A200 even after using the Gparted Linux
boot to try to wipe it clean (AND it was on a secondary drive)

If you want to go down that road and get this sorted once and for all cruxone,
will simply need to shut down and the restart while holding the 0 (zero) key.

By the way, most of the time was taken up by the installation of updates including SP1
and the installation of 30 or so programs I use (this means nothing in regard to a factory restore- I just thought I'd let you know).

My lappy came with Skype on- so even if you haven't got everything till you get home you
will be able to let those that care see your smiling face- smiling because your lappy will
    once again be working.

    Up to you.

Ok. I will try that sfc process again twice. It took almost no time. If that doesn't work, then I guess I am down for the factory restore. I don't have recovery discs. I don't have my external HDD with me, but I also have very few files I consider crucial. (They may even fit on my flash drive). If necessary I guess I could buy another one somewhere here. I don't have any friends here with Windows 7. With regard to my HDD being nearly full, it is two HDDs. One is 48GB and the other is like 465GB. A friend told me that I could and should move most of my programs to the E drive (the 465), but I never got around to it. He said that one is supposed to be for storage and the other to run programs or something. Not sure which was which. Any advice in that regard would be appreciated once I restore this thing. Will check back when I have run the sfc again.

    okay.

So your system is running on the small drive i assume, and while its possible to install the programs to the bigger drive, you "really" can't move them to the bigger drive, you can move your files (datafiles) like pictures, documents, music, etc... but you are sounding like you don't really have very many of those. You could keep it the way it is, or we could take a look at the specs on the drives and possibly make a more user friendly system setup during a clean install. But you need some type of either discs of SOME kind, or hope that the drive is setup with the recovery partition I spoke of earlier. If not, you can't even make any Discs from the system, as it uses that backed up copy in the recovery partition to make the discs. So we may not have the option of recovery/clean install.

I'll have to take a look at your Disk Management screen if we decide to either way!
