i should say i have a desktop and a laptop. on the desktop my headphones show, on the laptop they dont.
    it does seem odd,
the line in is the jack plug for the mic and headphones,
and the system tray is the grouped icons to the right of the taskbar by the clock and internet icon action center flag etc

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can't believe I simply just had to select "enable" in that drop-down menu. This problem was driving me crazy for the past few days.

i have the same problem. even worse, maybe. i can't find the audio manager in my control panel. i have it in my program files but it doesn't open when i click to run it. my system will only recognize usb headsets. i run on windows 7 ultimate 32bit. i have installed and reinstalled the driver but still, it won't recognize anything i plug into the audio jack.

ok ,back now. try this double click on the speakers icon with the green tick. in the window that opens there should be a jack information, and enable dropdown. be sure it says use this device ( enable ).

I was able to figure it out using what you said Hipster Doofus! I went to Dell audio (Realtek in some cases) AND I believe if you uncheck Full range speakers left and right you should be able to access the drop down menu under Speaker Config. There should be an option for headphones. Hope this helps!

I have the same problem too; and my headphones won't appear as a device no matter what. It won't appear in the drop down menu, either.
