RealTek HD Audio Onboard gives static, even when muted.

For a point of reference, I checked this thread first.

I'm having a similar issue to what is listed here. Even when all my sound is muted I have this distinct buzzing sound when I plug into my front jack. I've tried it with three different headphones, and two different sets of speakers. I do not have this issue when I am connected to the rear port, but I do if I run the "Audio Manager" and retask the front/rear input. I have followed everything the threadstarter has (including what Fireberd recommended about resetting the IRQ), and I am still running into the issue. I have even looked into the BIOS to see if there was something I could adjust there and nothing. I also found something about PC Beep, but I was unable to get that working as well.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that, like in the above thread, I don't have any sound issues until Windows starts (specifically, once the four dots on the Windows Loading screen becomes the WinLogo).

I've tried everything mentioned in this thread, and I've even Googled the Audio Codec to see if I can download something different to no avail. I'm at my wit's end, as I've had this computer for all of a week, and I don't want to have to send it back to the manufacturer if it's at all possible (though, since I hear it even when muted, I'm not sure that's a possibility at this point). For the sake of ease, I'm including my system specs (although I also have most of them posted in my profile).

Please advise, as I am pretty frustrated - usually I'm the one answering these kinds of questions!

If more information is needed, please let me know.

I have similar problem with Realtek High Definition Audio Chipset ALC888S on HP Pavillion Motherboard. I get a constant popping sound and garbled audio.

I have Altec Speaker setup with two front, two rear and woofre speaker setup and I connect Realtek Audio output via SPDIF Coax Cable.

I have loaded latest Drivers from RealTek Site R 268 Version # 6.0.1.6602.

The control panel "Realtek HD Audio Manger's display results seem to be confused with the display results from the Control Panel Sound Card. The former says I have a digital Output SPDIF Connection but the latter expects me to connect my speakers via analog connectors which I do not have because I have AN Altec Lansing setup described above using the SPDIF (Digital Mutli_Channel Audio Format) digital output connection.

Does anyone know what is going on?

Since it's only the front headphone jack, according to your post, this suggests interference/static is being picked up by the wiring to the front panel jack assembly or some other port such as USB on the same front panel assembly is feeding over.

Dell had a similar problem on one model a couple of years ago and it turned out the routing of the cable from the motherboard to the front panel was the cause. The cable was routed near the hard drive, along with the SATA data cable, and that was causing the problem. Rerouting the cable away from the hard drive eliminated the problem.

You would not have the problem booting up until Windows starts as most of the devices are not activated until Windows starts.

Thanks, Fireberd. I'll give that a look-see tonight, and follow up with results.

As for the Windows Startup thing, I had figured that (given your post in the aforementioned thread), but I still figured it worth noting, just in case.

    Hi Firebird:

Thank you for your prompt attention to this problem. I think you may have the answer to the popping sound. This popping sounnd abates when I choose defauilt 2 Channel Audio at 44.1 KHZ 16 bits

My main problem is the Realtek Manager won't let me set 5.1 configuration. Let me clarify my request witha note I wrote to RealTek Technical Support:

    RealTek Technical Support:

I have an HP Pavilion m9402f system that uses the ALC888S chipset and I have it digitally connected to an Altec Lansing DP/N 028YKP – 4770-0CH-2C81 Rev A00 Amplifier by an SPDIF coax. The Altec Lansing AMP is connected to two front, two back and one base woofer speakers.

I am running windows 7 Ultimate (64Bit) using your latest device driver from your Web Site R2.68 download which shows up as the Rev 6.0.1.6602 driver.

However I can only enable the 2-channel default device. I cannot configure the speaker arrangement as five speakers on the control panel. The configuration button is grayed out. So the software only enables two channels of the device even though it recognizes and shows that it is connected by SPDIF.

What do I have to do to configure this? Is it a register setting that is not being properly set up? What are the registry keys for this device?

    Thank you for your help!
