    Microphone problem

Ok, so I have tried and tried, I've been to countless forums and browsed countless threads trying to figure out how to get my microphone to work. The other day I upgraded my OS to Windows 7 64-bit, everything was working fine before hand. I upgraded the drivers on my on board sound card (Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio), which are currently dated 7/15/09. After digging around it appears that for some reason the OS is not detecting the microphone jack input jack (pink jack) on the back of my mother board and therefore will not detect the microphone. When I plug it into the line in jack (blue jack), it detects a microphone but nothing will record. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers countless times, I have checked the hardware a dozen times over and cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. I have checked mute buttons, and turned up the volume where-ever possible. Any of you guys have any suggestions for me?

    Here are my current specs:

    Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4 GHz
    5 GB RAM
    Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
    Fatality analog gaming headset.

    thanks
    Sean

Hi Sean! and welcome to Windows Seven Forums. I also have felt your frustration, so lets try to help if we can.

Sounds like you have tried a lot of things already so forgive me if I suggest something you have already tried? It might help us to know a little more about your sound card. Creative seems to be generous with its brand names but what we need to know is what chipset has actually been soldered to the card?

Also I found this thread, hope you have not already been there, tried that, and hope It might help you with a solution?

Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

I look forward to your next post and will try my best to help you with a solution!

There is nothing wrong with your driver or soundcard...
Creative has for some STUPID reason decided that the "microphone in" should be a flexi jack that also can be used as "Line in", and setting it to "line in" as default.

To change it to "Microphone in", youŽll need to go into creatives mixer and select what source input you want it to be.

Why they decided to make it "line in" default (in Vista and W7), I guess is to force customers to use all their crappy software (IŽm not a fan of their softwarebundle) because its the only way to enable "microphone in" on the soundcard.

If you have front-audio connectors in your computer case, you can use that without any problems (microphone is on by default via the front-audio panel connection.)

Hello King64, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums as well. Thank you for your suggestion. I wouldn't have thought of a web cam mic even though I have one.

    SEANTG!!!
I'm using an X-Fi XtremeGamer and could never get the mic to recognize any input either (in XP or Vista). My solution was to disconnect the soundcard from the front audio ports on the case. After that everything works fine - it seems the X-Fi flexijack does not like the card to be connected to a "non" flexijack mic port. Give this a try if you have a similar setup and see if it solves your issue.
I hope this helps you bro.

Ok so after several days of trying and trying to get this to work, I have broken down and gotten an off board sound card. Everything works fine...kinda, some of the jacks don't work, but I'm not 100% sure that the problem is with the OS, and not with the drivers themselves. When I ran Windows XP, I seem to remember fighting the sound card for quite a while, and while I don't like the fact that I had to go out and spend $100 on a new card, I'm wondering if maybe this problem should be presented to Creative as I have been noticing alot of threads about people who use onboard sound cards and they don't work right.
