hi i have just bought my mother a new pc lenovo windows 7 64bit i set it up all working fine but there is no sound? i thought back to vista when there were problems, i have looked at the device manager and it lists intel R h61 express chipset, i tried the lenovo site for downloads but it seems it is for realtek?

The Intel express chipset and the RealTek sound are two different items. Intel chipset is the motherboard chipset drivers.

Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. The "Speakers" need to be set as the default playback device. You can also configure for the correct speaker type and test the speakers from this panel.

Without knowing what Lenovo MODEL you have, people can not help with hardware related issues.
Do you have the MODEL #, and/or a link to the Lenovo Support page for this laptop?

What does it show in Device Manager for "Audio devices"?
    Any errors in Device Manager?
    Post a screen print.

As this is a new PC, you should either be contacting Lenovo for warranty support or if you bought it locally, take it back to the store for exchange. You shouldn't have to troubleshoot or reinstall drivers, etc on a new PC.

    +1, I agree with fireberd.

Some dumb things I would double-check...

    • Are the speakers connected correctly
    • They are powered on (if needed)
    • The volume is not set to minimum
    • No devices are set to mute
    • The Sound Format is set to a Supported Format (i.e. 24bit, 44100 Hz)
    • Recording and Playback default devices are set correctly

I also don't understand you saying

Do you have a Realtek audio device or not?
What do you see in Device Manager for "Sound, video and game controllers"?
Can you post a Device Manager screen print like this?
